We want to know the truth

We want to know the truth !! is it best to use the OEM 2 stroke oils or can off-brand be used ? if so, which are the good ones ? We have Evinrude motors,
    A 1993 Evinrude 115 premix, and a 1997 Evinrude 200 VRO

When it comes to the subject of 2 stroke oil you will get opinions and my opinion is you should use XD50 or XD100 in those motors! Don't trust anything else in mine.

I can't speak for the off brands but the OEM oils seem to do their job pretty well. We have '93 Erude 50, '88 Johny 110, '78 Johny 70, '67 Erude 6hp, and a '54 Johny 5.5hp. they have only been fed J/E oil. I've had no reason to switch to anything else.

Re: We want to know the truth (BESman)

I use the Penn Semi-synthetic, and it works well. I have used it in 3 different engines with no problems that are oil related.

I run seafoam through mine periodically to make sure it stays clean. I may switch to XD-100 when I run out of the big jug of Penn that I have.

I think as long as you don't use cheapie oil and that you decarb periodically, you should be ok.

I have always used the Evinrude oil you buy at Walmart or Academy. XD25 or XD30. Maybe an occasional Quicksilver. I am starting to mix seafoam in with the gas. What do you other guys think ?

I now run the Pennzoil full synthetic. Runs great on my 2003 250 Rude. Also I can get it at Walley World. I also run the seafoam in every tank of gas.

I have read where some guys like the Amsoil. They have about 4 or 5 different ones

Re: We want to know the truth (pappastratos)

I read this on the Merc Forum::

I'm sure Jay Smith will be along shortly to address the issue of breaking in a motor before running synthetic oil. Basically, synthetics are less viscous than conventional dino oil, but are more slippery. New, or non-broken in engines need dino oil for break in because of a thicker more tacky oil film that clings to the cylinder walls and bearings. Dino oil helps cushion the moving parts until they're properly broken in. Synthetic oil will substantially increase, or even prevent a proper break in.

Why even run synthetic oil ?

Re: We want to know the truth (lkhartwl)

Jay had some syn oil failures. I think the issue is more focused around the rings not being able to transfer heat effictively using the syn oil. Seems like some else said something similar to that to, maybe Sam Baker.

In any event, I wouldn't rebuild a car engine and break it in with syn oil, so I wouldn't do it on a new outboard either.

Alot of people like Amsoil. I have heard it leaves a gritty residue, wether true or not I don't know. Jay told me that the Penn semi-syn is the same as Merc semi-syn, and I figure he should know.

What I wouldn't do is buy into the Amsoil deal that you can mix theirs at 100 to 1.

If you want the best oil, get Alisyn, join S&F and shipping is free. It is Syn oil, and most all the folks over there who use it, rave about it. I think even Jay likes it too.

I think as I said earlier, as long as you use a good quality oil, and run some seafoam through there periodically, you should be fine. If you don't want any worries, run the XD-100, you won't need seafoam or any anti-carbon agent then.
