Have a OMC 50 gallon L-Shaped gas tank which measures 59 inches across, 15 inches deep and 29 1/2 inches dead center where the fuel sender unit goes. Can NYON3 recommended A fuel sendeE unit and size. The tank was missing the fuel sender unit and having issues finding the right fuel sender unit setup / configuration.
I would call or email Moeller and give them the depth of your tank and they will tell you the part number for the sending unit that will fit your application. My Moeller reed switch style sending unit has worked perfect since I purchased it.

Tried the 15 inch Moeller reed switch style but wouldn’t register past half full on new gauge. Will call Moeller.
You sure the float wasn’t hanging on the tank wall?
Did you have 25 gal in the tank? Going 1/2 is the only sure way to make sure it is reading properly
