Do I have to tear in down again?

I replaced my water pump. 98 200 venom. I did the whole kit, the water pressure needle is like stuck to the bottm of the screw that is on the inside of the bezel. Me thinks it should sit on the top of the screw. I am wondering if I put the impeller in backwards. I was out on the lake and the stream seemed weak, so I looked at the gauge and it was stuck in thei position, shutting the motor of, it stays in the same spot. I noticed all this while ideling and putting it on the trailer.

The stream just seemed weaker to me. I looked in the manual, and they say nothing about an enlarged prostate.

Any time engine is off the waterpressure gauge should be @ 0 if it's reading any thing else, it likely froze over the winter and isn't reading right. Mine froze this year in balmy Ga.!! What lb pressure gauge is it?

I dont know what lb gauge it is. I'll find out. Would I have a stream at all if the impeller was backward?? Freezing is a definate possability. Never did it before but it does happen.I'm going to check on the lb's now.

Even if you had the vanes on the impeller facing the wrong way, the would have righted themselves when the engine started. Sounds like the gauge is shot..

Well thats good news, I thought they would not fix them selves. I was fish on a sm lake, and flew a couple of laps to blow the dust off. (first time out) It ran smooth and I had no warning buzzers, I did not look at the gauges other than the trim. What do they get for one of them water pressure gauges? It is a plane OMC stock gauge.

About $65.00 or so. What part number pump did you install? Pull off your tell tale and check for debris inside the tell tale could be some junk inside of it.

Great idea I had not thought about cleaning out the tell tale. I'd have to check on the pump # . I'm sure I wrote it down in the garage. I got it from a omc dealer with my motors vin #. If I have it I'll post the # here.

In my experience a 3 liter looper has STOUT pressure coming out of the pee hole. Like pressure wash your driveway pressure.

Re: Do I have to tear in down again? (Lockjaw)

That is the correct part number for your water pump. As LJ says at idle you should have a very good stream coming out of the tell tale. It should be able to bore a hole in the dirt just at idle. Did you have any extra parts like the white key? Large O ring under Impeller? Thin O ring between impeller housing and outside housing? Insert into pickup tube before the water pickup tube housing got screwed on? D oring installed properly?

Re: Do I have to tear in down again? (ChampioNman)

I'm going to try it in the drive way, I know how hard it should be comeing out. The d ring may have moved when going togather. I did not have any glue that they call for. Would greese work? Wish they would make a ring that fit. When I looked at it at idle on the water, it seemed weak. I had no extra parts.

Re: Do I have to tear in down again? (xltrod)

my 2000 175 had marginal water pressure 8 or so at idle, never went over 13 psi. I had a lot of water coming out of the housing when on the muffs. The local marine guy said it was normal.

I bought the whole pump kit.

When I took it apart, every thing looked fine, the impeller was intact and pretty pliable. Then I started looking at all the seals they gave me in the kit. There was supposed to be a "grommet" (hour glass shaped) for lack of a better word in the bottom of the LU housing. It wasn't there, just a white plastic tube that took the water to the motor. Nothing to seal the bigger black tube on the water pump to the smaller white tube coming down out of the housing. I never would have known something was missing if I hadn't bought the whole kit, and didn't wonder where all the "extra" pieces went.

Installed every thing that should be there (I think), and I now can drill a hole in a gravel driveway with the stream coming out of the pee port, and, there's much less water (not none) coming out of the housing.

I have very limited experience, but this may help.

Re: Do I have to tear in down again? (mikezohsix)

Use a hi tack adhesive to hold the D ring. Just daub it in about 6 locations around the black housing and apply the D ring. Gasket adhesive to secure the metal housing to the plastic and keep any stuff away from the small intake hole on the pump that is the primer hole. The tapered rubber grommet goes in the lower half of the plastic housing. The white plastic tube that Mikezohix it talking about is the tube that goes into the water pick up tube.
