Trailer brakes activated driving down the road

2019 Nitro Z20 coming home from lake. (4th time trailering) Guy pulls up next to me and tells me my trailer brake are smoking. Pull over and find all four brakes smoking badly.Emergency brake was not engaged, tires were rolling but brakes obviously on. Looking back I did feel some slight resistance, but never thought trailer brakes were engaged like they were.

Called BPS spoke with service manager who tells me to chalk the front of a tire and pull forward to possibly disengage any braking. When I did this, the tire against the chalk was locked up pushing the chalk forward, while the tire behind was rolling. Wife was pulling forward while I watched the chalk. She said it felt like something broke free. I got behind the wheel and did not feel any resistance as I coasted in the lot with no power. Was able to pull it home with no further issues.

BPS says it must be the actuator, and the only other issue like this they have seen was under hard braking, where the emergency stop was activated and never disengaged, which occurred recently on a Tahoe with a similar trailer.

Anyone heard or have had this occur on a Nitro trailer, or any insight as to what may have caused this. Any possibility power loading would cause a trailer brake issue. Always power loaded with my 2015 Z7 with no issues.

Yep I did. My 2016 did the same thing twice. They had to replace the whole axel and the actuator. The brakes shoes and bearings were shot.

My 1997 procraft had a problem like that, i actually push the grease out of the bearing when i got home. The actuator went bad, i replaced it and all was good no damage to bearings.

Yes sir, had it happen on my 14' Z8 the day I picked it up from the dealer. Actuator was seized up and the brakes were stuck on. I got lucky and was only a few miles from the dealer when I stopped for gas and could smell something hot while I was walking around the boat. I was actually surprised as well how little resistance there was with the brakes on. I never would have noticed if I hadn't stopped.

Sounds like BPS is going to replace actuator, pads, rotors, and whatever else they find. They said it will take at least a week to get the parts. Hopefully it fixes any future issues.

If that works it will be two weeks faster than I got mine fixed.
