    No reverse!!

Just took the old girl (91 xp200) out, and no reverse...did a water pump job, but didn't change any linkage settings. If worse case, and I have to replace the clutch
dog what other parts do I need to change?

I ain't trying to be a smart ass but did you hook up the shift linkage to the shift rod? You may have not hit the mark when you put the shift rod screw through the retainer. It can be a real PITA to get that shift rod in to that slot. Check that first.

Yep..my linkage from the lower unit is held in the shift-rod lever by a pin..otherwise when shifting to forward the shift rod would be pulled loose from the shift lever. Checked the adjustment on the cables also.
I don't know if there is an adjustment on the bottom end of the shift rod. How is the rod connected to the shifter on the propshaft?

Did you turn the shift rod at all when you had it apart? You might also want to disconnect the shift cable at the engine and manually operate the shift lever by hand to see if you can get reverse.

When you say no reverse, does this mean it's trying to connect and all you get is a ratcheting sound, or absolutely nothing? The ratcheting would indicate an adjustment problem, where nothing usually means an internal situation that requires disassembly. If it was working fine before the W.P. change, something has changed in your linkage somewhere to keep it from pushing down on the shift rod. You ARE moving the propshaft when you're trying to engage the gears are'nt you? If you're not running the engine when trying to shift, this is important!

If you do run the motor make sure your feet and other bystanders are well away from the motor. See Eddie that's how it works

    Re: No reverse!! (gearcaseman)

Thanks Gearcaseman for the info, and yes I am turning the output shaft..otherwise
the clutch dogs couldn't ingauge the ring gears. I think some how I messed up reinstallng the lower unit, because your thoughts on what is happening is right on.
That ratcheting sound is just what it is. It's like the reverse dogs are bearly
coming into contact with the ring. Is it possiable that the shiftrod could come lose from the shifter, and still shift. Since the rod is pulled upwards to shift to forward
looks like there would be no shift to foward at all, but it does travel both ways....
Oh well I'm going to pull it tomorrow, and see anyway
Thank you everyone for the help!!

    Re: No reverse!! (billyboy)

No, if the shift rod comes loose, you would have only the clutch dog position at the time of disengagement, that is, no rod engagement inside the unit, no movement of the clutchdog. It sounds as if the rod got turned a few rounds while the unit was off. Try adjusting the black trunnion nut to compensate for any movement that may have occurred and see if that puts you back in the ballpark. Just turn it 2 or 3 rounds for more positive reverse engagement to see if that helps.

    Re: No reverse!! (gearcaseman)

Well..mystery solved!! When I did the water pump the shiftrod was turned..screwing the rod into the gear case 2 additional turns...shorting the rod about an eight of an inch. Sinced the rod was shorte there wasn't enough throw to
properly engauge reverse, and more than enough to hit forward!!
It's a crying shame you can't turn the shiftrod with the lower unit installed!

You can, but it's much easier to use the little trunnion nut and be happy again! Happy Boating!!!!
