B17 bomber over Chautauqua Lake today

There was a B17 WWII bomber at the Jamestown airport today taking people for rides over Chautauqua Lake. Over the course of several hours while I was fishing, we saw it flying at low levels over the lake many times. What a fantastic sight. For the first time in weeks, we had clear blue skies too. We were very lucky to see such a historic plane. If you ever get a chance to see a B17 plane flying, don't pass up the opportunity.

They give rides out of a nearby airport every year. You can feel the big radials before you hear them, and then there is no other sound like it. Flew directly over the house several times. Got some excellent pictures but I’ll be damned if I can figure out how to load them off this ‘smart’ phone.

You can! This is the one we flew. They travel around the country. I think there are 1 or 2 others selling rides as well

Can you imagine what a squadron would sound like flying over?

my gandfather flew on a B17 Bomber (Gremlins Hideout). He was the radio man. The stories he would tell about the plane were pretty cool to a young boy. Love Ya Grandpa!

Cool story about the B 24. Three years ago we were at the airport when the planes were there (they come to Venice every year) The B24 had just landed from taking people for rides. Anyway, there was a very nicely dressed older guy with a walker there with his grandson. I overheard someone say that man was a navigator on a B24 and flew 25 missions. I couldn't pass up a chance to shake his hand and thank him for his service. I asked him if he had just taken a ride in the B24. I'll NEVER forget the look on his face and his answer. He just kind of had a proud smile and a reminiscing look and said quietly "No, I flew on them enough" . Still sends a chill when I think about that encounter.

That explains why I kept seeing the B24 on approach to LEX. Live 6mi from runway on approach path. See some cool stuff sometimes.

Watch a Movie/Documentary on Amazon Prime, HBO too I think, called Cold Blue. Best I've ever seen for describing what it was like to fly in B-17's back in WW2. Very brave men. (All of them were regardless of theater or duty)

Real men manned those birds. WE ALL owe a great debt to those men, may we never forget what they have done for our country and world freedom.

Next door to my Dads furniture store growing up was an accountant. He had all kinds of military stuff in his office. Come to find out he was the navigator in the lead plane on several bombing runs in WW2. I enjoyed listening to his stories as a young boy.

In WWII we sent as many as 1000 B-17s on a single raid.

    https://nationalinterest.org/blog/th...ers-sent-20475

another interesting fact, the 8th Air Force (bomber command in Europe) lost more men KIA and MIA in WWII than the entire Marine Corps.
