2000 175hp Johnson, what engine is it?

I bought a boat last fall that goes in the lake for the first time this weekend.

It has a "2000" Johnson 175 that was manufactured 9/1999. The model is J175PLSSC, the SN is G 04775554, the engine family is Y1PXM0158210.

What's a Fast Strike, what's the difference in the engines?
Is this a Fast Strike engine?

    any help would be appreciated....

Your motor is a 2000 175HP 20 inch shaft carb motor.

Oh I checked on it last night. I has the same heads a fast strike has. If you can turn it over 5400 then I would say it has the large bore carbs, and thus, would be a fast strike, even though I don't think they call them that anymore.

    thanks guys,

so the "fast strike" was an earlier engine, not offered in 2000, that was a little hotter than a regular engine because of different heads and carbs?

the Johnson Faststrike and the Evinrude Intruder were the 20" bass boat motors that were slightly different than the regular production ones. They came out in 1991 and in those years bass tournaments were limited to 150hp. These motors were tuned better (the HO's of their day) with sometimes different heads, reeds, and carbs. They had stiffer motor mounts, too.

What he said. The 91 models were the stoutest. They also had a different head then the rest of the fast strike engines.

150's and 175's both use the same head (FS's) in 92 on, and the same size carbs. The regular 150's use a different set of heads, and smaller bore carbs. Upgrading the carbs, which I have done, added 200 rpms to the top end of my engine, with no loss down low.

150's make peak hp at 5400, 175's make it at 5700. The 150's are stronger for their HP then the 175's. They are also better suited to heavier hulls. The main diff is the exhaust port height on the 175 is a little higher.

I am going to change out my reed cages for cages from a Ficht engine, and add boyesens, hopefully next weekend. I know the cages flow better, and are rubber coated. Hopefully that will add a little punch. It is supposed to be a good upgrade. I am hoping for an additional 100 rpms on the top end, and a little more punch.

These are great little engines. They make great power and are very good on gas. I really like mine.

Craig...keep me posted on how you make out with the cage and reed swap. Might be interested in the same for my 98 150 FS. Thanks.....Ed
