    Tohatsu MD 50 B trim won't work

This engine has been in storage for 4 years. The owner says the TNT would not go up or down when he took off the boat. I removed the Tilt motor no water damage and it looks like new inside and runs as it should just won't move the ram. I can physically move the ram a couple of inches and theres lots of pressure. Checked the relief valve screw. Its tight and replaced the 2 rubber washers on it.

Filled with Tilt Trim fluid but no movement. Any ideas?

    Where should I start? Thanks!

Does it "try" to move it? Does the motor make a few revolutions then stop? Are you going direct or through a relay?

I have taken it off the engine because the whole piece was frozen to the engine bracket and needed to be re shimmed and the carbon steel rods replaced. That was a big job but necessary. The trim is connected to the relays on the motor. The motor runs great and no sign of water intrusion inside the motor. No apparent movement at all. Tried bleeding but the ram does not move freely even with the fill hole closed and manual screw open.

Are we talking a lot of corrosion here?

Since the original post I've taken it all apart and cleaned again. No water intrusion. Tilt motor looks like new. The pump did have a little water intrusion but no corrosion inside or outside the pump. Cleaned the inside of the pump again, several O rings replaced that were commonly available on the relief valve and generally cleaned. Replaced the fluid but had a lot of trouble getting bled properly. Eventually got it. All seems ok now. There was a severe corrosion issue with the carbon steel rod Tohatsu used to hold the tilt mechanism to the side bracket. This is a bad design and they offer no alternative to carbon steel rod when replacing. I am going back with 316 stainless steel rod. For the top and bottom. If you have one of these engines you should consider replacing these steel rods wether you use in fresh or salt water. Just a "heads up!"

Good work. As far as carbon steel, you probably saved yourself problems replacing it with stainless.
