    Chris H and Avery

Can you guys help me. Im going to give Ricky196 a tour of Lay lake. Can you IM me some general ideas on what to throw and what to target. Humps? Islands? Anything you can tell me would help me put him in the right general area and get a game plan. Its been so damn hot I have not been out in a month. Im not looking for honey holes or secret lures or anything, just a good foundation to work on .

I'd love to help you out, Chris, but I don't generally fish Lay Lake. If it's like the rest of the Coosa River lakes and I didn't have time to prefish it, I'd probably start the day with a small topwater like a Pop-R around grass beds in some of the bigger creeks. Then, as the sun came up, I'd target docks with deeper water nearby. My favorite lure for that is either a Texas rigged YUM finesse tube or a 4" finesse worm on a shaky head. That's usually a good summertime pattern on just about any lake with a number of docks, especially on a lake with a decent population of spotted bass.

If there's any current at all, I'd look at throwing a small crankbait or Texas rigged worm or tube around the grass beds on the main lake. Again, the one's with deeper water nearby should be the most productive.

I'd also watch for schooling fish busting shad or other bait fish. They might be nothing but dinks but they're still fun to catch on a small topwater bait like a Pop-R.

I don't pretend to be a very good angler - probably mediocre at best - and I'm sure somebody will come along with some better ideas, but that's probably where I'd start.

    Good luck!

Sorry dude, Just saw your post in here. I dont check the Alabama forum everyday like I do some of the others. Last week the water was still down a tad but there was still most of the grass in the water. I would swim a jig early in main lake pockets along the outside edges and fish shaky heads when the sun gets a little higher around docks on the river. Its been real tough down there for me lately. Hard for me to put anything together when the sun is real high. I have seen some schooling over the ledges in the evenings when Im down there. Lots of shad around. I bet they are there in the early mornings to but I like to fish shallow too much. If they are ever moving any water during the daylight hours you can go up river and fish below the islands that are right below the 280 bridge. Ive been up there before in the summer and caught a LOT of keepers (20-30) at a time on worms and shaky heads.
