Northern Chapter sign up here to fish Upper Bear Creek on 11-18

It looks like Upper Bear Creek has been selected as the lake to fish for November 18th. We also need the assistance of the local guys with selecting a ramp and providing driving instructions since most of us have never fished it before. Thanks!

Sign me up. The best ramp is twin forks, comming from the north on 13 as you come in to bearcreek turn left in front of the school {Philips High} there is a railroad crossing right in front of school, the ramp will be short distance on the right after you croos a bridge ,maybe 1/2 mile, If your comming from south up 13, as your coming into theres a sign to upper bear dam but thats not the ramp, cross the bridge over bearcreek and come on into town turn right in front of school. there is a car wash directly across from rr crossing

Thanks for the info! I just looked it up on MapQuest. Is that County Road 79 that you turn on to off of AL-13 by the high school?

Thats the correct road. It kind of steep going over the railroad so they made a crossing maybe 75 yard on down for school buses , everyone crosses there its easyer and the road turn back to 79. There a parade station on the right coming from north that serve some biscuits in the mornings, and if anyone needs a permit can get it there or at wallmarts. I think bcda should have a pay station like the National forest ramps , but they don't . Maybe I should call and suggest it them. Their a philips 66 coming from the south can also get permit . Their was a excellent place to buy food and supplies close to ramp but it shut down and is being redone

Steve, according to Mapquest it's only 50 miles from Killen to Phillips High School and I'm guessing that the ramp's a couple of minutes or so from there, so I'm probably looking at an hour and thirty minutes. I would think that it would be ten minutes or so quicker for you. See ya there!!

We will need directions coming from Cullman since I've never been anywhere close to this area. Also, we need a permit in addition to a state fishing license??? How much do these cost? Are there any maps available to help us avoid hazards? How dangerous is this lake to run for a first time fisherman?

I talked to bcda this morning and they said they would alow me to pickup anyones day use permit that was comming from out of town, if you want me to. I beleive they are 3.oo a day, 20.oo for a yearly and it covers all 4 lakes. They also can be purchased at wallmarts in russeville and haleyville. The lake is at full pool now and theres a couple of place marked with pipes to see, other than that its safe just one long point vissible from boat ramp. From cullman take 278 to double springs then turn right on hyw 195 to haleyville it will carry you by walmart open 24hrs, on into haleyville turn right on hyw 13 it will go on into bearcreek. If you want less turns stayon 278 to natual bridge, turn right on 13 to haleyville. You could also come through moultan take 24 to russelville and turn left on 13 to go through phillcampbell and then into bearcreek. Coming 278 should only be 65 mile or so.

Thanks for the offer! I'll need a day use permit and would really appreciate it if you'd pick one up for me. Can we pay you at the ramp Saturday morning?

I was thinking we ought to meet at 5:45 or so for registration and "ease off" at first light. Will that be early enough or do we need to bump it up a little?

As far as I know theres not any navigational maps, I can pickup some pamplets that will show a general lay of the lakes but it not very accurate. You can reed some about the lakes at http://www.bearcreeklakes.com. also check alabama county maps on google, they will show somewhat the lay of the lakes . upper bear is in 3 countys though, marion ,franklin & winston. Tva shows a sportfishing index on the lakes also. I ll be glad to pickup permits ,Ill make a list thurs. or fri, and purchase them I beleive all i need will be first and last name.

Thanks for the offer but I found out that Gray's Tackle in Sheffield also has them so I'll stop by there during lunch one day and get mine there. (Like I really need another excuse to go to Gray's!! )
