    Questions from a DeCarbing Newbee

I want to DeCarb my 1977 Evinrude 85 HP, but I have no idea on how to go about it. Anyone out there willing to give me some help? Can I use BRP Engine Tuner on my older motor? If so where can I buy it online? Sorry about the lame questions, I am a rookie at this sort of thing.

No problem on the question, if you don't ask you wont know.

You can purchase the BRP Engine Tuner from any Johnson/Evinrude dealer, follow the instructions on the can, you can inject it through the primer if its equipped with the shrader valve (the fitting on you car tire to add air) or remove the air box a spray it into the carbs, stay away from the flywheel.

    Does this help?

Sacto, I prefer shooting it thru the carbs, Just take the airbox off and squirt it into each carb as per the directions on the can. The first time I did my ole 78 Johnson Javelin 85 hp I turned the driveway black!!!! This is some good stuff!!, Did my nephews 150 Faststrike and turned his prop and yard black!!! Both motors are running like a dream!!

Thanks guys. I take it I should decarb somewhere where I do not mind getting covered in carbon. Do you run the motor while you are spraying the decarb into the motor?

Yes sir. Just follow the directions on the can and you will be ok.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

Be aware that the prop and flywheel can cause major injuries, stay away from both.

You might not want to rev the motor as the directions state if doing the decarb on the hose.

Re: Questions from a DeCarbing Newbee (RUSTY63)

Just wanted to add a followup to this post (I know it's old...).

I just purchased a 1999 Sprint 207 F/S with a '98 Johnson Venom 200 and had never heard of Decarbing before these forums. The last boat i had was a '76 Glastron Tri-Hull about 12+ years ago.

I get the idea and why to decarb, but how permanent is the staining on concrete? Will a pressure washer be able to remove it easily?

Glad I found this forum, you guys are great!

Plan on posting the motor info later to see if anything comes up from the experts that share their knowledge.

    Thanks,

    Wade

    Cheers!

Wade, if you don't know if it's ever been decarbed, the guys here will prolly recommend to run some BRP 2+4 conditioner, ringfree, any other carbon cleaner, fuel stabilizer thru a couple tanks at their recommended dosages to help loosen the carbon, then do a complete decarb.
