Crankshaft seal replacment need some input !

Hey guys I finaly got this 2000 175 Johnson torn down for a crankshaft seal and find myself with more questions about it then just the seal . Well it had a leak in the lower crankshaft seal and looks like someone that rebuilt it never put the seal in right and hack one side of it . I wanted to know if you can remove the crankshaft without removing the pistons all the way since I have good compression I did not want to take them out . I wanted to Just undue the connecting rods and slide the pistons toward the cyl head but the manual said dont let the rods come in contact with the pistons sides . Would I be better just taking the pistons out ? I also notice that one side of my intake is black and the other is clean what would do this ? you can see in the picture that a few of the rods are black too . I also found a melted stator , looks like the power coils have started to loose there insulation out the front It will need to be replaced for sure. Thanks for the input on this one ! Have you taken the heads off? If not just leave them on and un-bolt the connecting rods but make sure you know what rod cap goes on what rod. If you do not this you will be tearing it down again and rebuilding everrrryyything. But to answer your question, you should be able to take the crank out and leave the pistons in. I would however take them out anyway and put new rings on them and check them.

Are you sure that you are looking at the intake? Only reason I ask is that the exhaust side of the cylinders will be black or have crud on them from the exhaust and the intake side will/should be clean.

I guess it would help if I looked at the pictures!! Man I dunno, that looks like black paint or carbon deposits baked on there. When I tore mine down, mine had a polished look to it.

I would just get some 10W-40 and see how that works.

Get a few cans of engine tuner and spray it on the intake and let it soak in an use a stiff brush to clean it out. You should be able to get the seal and bearing off with out pulling the crank all the way out. Just gently pry up on both ends of the crank.

Just get you a wooden dowel, penetrating oil, and a hammer and take your time getting it off. When you go to put a new one on, put the bearing in the oven set to 350 and let it sit in there for 10 min to get it hot, it should slide right on after that.

I didn't when I put mine back together but I haven't started it yet so we'll see!!

You defiently want to use lock tight on them though

Actually the re-assembly portion says to use tcw-3 oil on the threads.

Really? When I was putting my merc back I was told to use locktight on the rod screws. That's interesting.
