Whent and looked at an x19 today. Now for some ??

Whent out and looked at a 2001 X19 with a 200hp yamaha today. The overall shape of the boat was good, was scraped up and had some paint gone of the rails and underside, lots of marks on the underside. The carpet was in fair shape and the seats are going to need to be redone soon. It had one dent up front on the nose area and looked like it could be pushed out if I could get into the area form the front. The trolling motor was old and needed some knobs. The wiring didn't look hacked into, the tank area looked ok, dirty but no major issues. The only thing I saw was it looked like the transome area was rewelded, it wasn't deformed or look like it was damaged, but showed some cracking on the welds in spots. Is this common? A major issue? I have yet to hear it run and get the motor checked if I think the boat is worth what they are asking at 10,000. The owner couldn't be there today to meet me. It didn't look like the lower unit had any damage to it. Let me know what you think.

It's in Yantis, just south of Sulfur springs. Just doing some looking it priced right at $10. Most glass boats of this year and hp are going for $12.

If welded right it should be OK but if cracking something not right You might want a welding shop at the welds and check them out. It is not a common problem. My son has my old X18 with a F150 and no problem that you have talked about. Those dents want be that easy to get out .125 alum.

I have the welding and fab part covered the motor is the main concern.

The welds don't look bad, just one spot that looks iffy to me, I may just be over causious going into a deal not knowing if it's an issue. The transom looked fine like nothing had hit it at any point.

In 04 Xpress redisigned the tramsom and supports, since then I've hearn no issues. For models pre 04 you could take them back to Xpress and they upgraded the transom to the new design. Maybe that is what you are seeing. Ask him who did the work. If not you may be able to take it back to Xpress to have the upgrade installed.

I have an 03 X19 TS with a 200 Merc on and have not had any trouble with transom. Does any one have any pictures of the two different transom designs to post? Thanks Dennis

The owner at the shop didn't know what has been done to the boat. It's an out of state boat and the owner of the boat droped it off for a consignment sale. I will the call the owner later today if I get a chance to.

As for is it common to have cracks in the welds I dont think so.I got a 21x and beat the hell out of it and have no cracks. As for the dent in the nose I wouldnt waste your time its gonna be out of the water when your running and that alum. is alot stronger than I think you think it is.Just keep in mind start off low like 7500 cash and go from ther and piont out all the bad stuff with the boat that your going to have to fix.If asking 10,000 they well take 9,000 no problem.Good luck hope it works out.

Re: Whent and looked at an x19 today. Now for some ?? (Husqvarna)

I have a 1999 X19 and have had it since new. Cracks are not common! Are they along the sides of the splash well? That is directly above the inside supports. Look inside closely at the knees for the transom support. If it's dirty get get it clean so you can see the welds. They are welded to the transom and also to the hull ribs. If it's trashed it will show up there. Also look at the rib to transom welds. Hard to get to less being upside down with a mirror but that is how to see any damage.

As far as the engine goes, a compression test will give an initial indication of a problem, but you are better off with a leak down test to get the real story as to the life left in it.

I looked at the inside and it didn't look like it had any damage there or had any issue with the welds. I'm just waiting to hear from the owner, the number he left at the shop is disconected.

Re: Whent and looked at an x19 today. Now for some ?? (Kevin R.)

Just heard from the owner. He's only owned the boat for 8 months and has very limited info on the boat from what he was told. He said he thinks it has about 340hrs on the engine. He bought it and the wife hates it so he bought a glass fish and ski and is tring to sell the xpress now. He is fine with me taking it out and getting checked out by a shop. I did call a couple of shops about the transom reweld and was told as long as the back end isn't buckeled out that there was no issue there. As stated here also one told me that in '01 the suports wern't welded all the way up and could strech the weld some with larger engines. I guess if everything checks out I'll have to deal some with him then I may be in an xpress soon.

Keep us posted Kevin. If it needs fab work or alum repair I have two places that do that that I've used. Plus soon I'll have a tig myself

Cool, the only two issues I know of the the one weld in the back and mybe if I can't get to the dent in the front I'm fine with cutting the area out and rewelding the patch back once I get it straight. Now I just need to have the motor checked out.

Re: Whent and looked at an x19 today. Now for some ?? (Kevin R.)

Ok I went by and took a couple of quick shots of the boat. The shop was only 15miles out of the way today.
This is the splashwell on the left side rear, it is the one that has a bad reweld job.

Same area but down the transom.

Just to the left of the splashwell. This is the"cracked weld" that I was refering too.

This is the weld at the splashwell area but down into the well.

Seat area, they are in fair shape but do need to be redone.

Better veiw of the dent in the front.

Drivers area of the front part fo the splashwell area that has been rewelded. Shows how poor of a job they did.

The underside is pretty straight, no major dents, just a lot of scrapes.

The sides are straight, just a lot of paint scrapes and marks, no dents or rewelded spots.

This is at the jackplate area. I didn't see any welds that look like they were an issue.

That old girl has been rode hard. Nothing a good welder can't fix. The dent can be fix also by removing the the front dash if it has one and beating it and smooth it with Dura glass. It depends how you want it to look but you can put a good paint job on her and new decals and she'll look like new. Aluminum is not to bad to work with and more durable than glass at least it is to me.
