The silver square looking thing is a zinc sacrificial anode. It corrodes away instead of the lower unit. The four holes with screens in them are the water pickups that cool the engine. The circle up front, I'm not sure unless its another small water pickup.
hope this helps.
The one on the front of the LU is the speedo pickup. The rest is correct as to BESman's post.
Thanks guys! These BBC boards are awsome! I hope to be able to contribute at some point.
So, on the one up front, being the speedo pick, it it is packed full of *stuff*, this probably explains why my speedo is working?
Any tips for unpacking it?

Yep, take a 3/16" drill bit and by hand twist it into the opening to remove the debris. DO NOT use a power drill just spin it by hand.
Sweet! Thanks again ChampioNman.

Thanks C-man, i kinda thought that might be a speedo pickup, but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks for clearing that up.![]()
What about compressed air from the nipple out?

Compressed air is not recommended, it can blow the line off inside of the case. I take a small jig hook and straighten it out. Push it in and when you pull it out the barb on the hook will pull the debris out.

Thank guys.
3/16" drill bit did the trick. Lots of dirt looking stuff came out. I'm headed out to a small lake tomorrow, we'll see if it results in a working speedo.
