    1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster

Unfortunately I trashed a lower unit. I have seen people post that they are running 1.75 with a 250xs and really like them. I currently have 1.62. I believe that I could trade out since I am going to have to rebuild anyway. Should I go 1.75? Can some of you guys give me some compairison numbers of the two. The way I look at it is if I might want different now is the time to change or not.

    Thanks
    Tony

You also must think about the props you have now,, with the 1.75's you will gain about 400 rpm, what will that do to your props

I have several props that I need to gain rpms with so I'm gonna get a set of 1.75's with my income tax money

But I do have the luxury for now of having two cases so one will stay 1.62.

Is this with a 250 XS you are asking? Lou's remarks are spot on IMO but he has a 300X EFI motor which runs a higher RPM powerband than the Opti 250 XS. A lot depends on the boat your running as well as your goals and existing props/RPM's

    I'd keep the 250 XS running between 5850 and 6000 RPM's for the EFI 300X you can go 6400 to 6600 RPM's

Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (esdbass)

I don't think ya'll understand my question. If I have to get a bigger prop that is ok. What I want to know is the difference in performance with the two gears. Ex. holeshot, 50mph punch. I know they will go up but is it enough to really tell. I assume top end will go down, but is it 2 mph or 10 mph? The reason that I am asking is i run loaded two people 90 percent of the time. I am thinking that a little more power might serve me well.

    Thanks again,
    Tony

You will likely end up with a 32 pitch prop to fish with....Big wheels are hard on gears so keep that in mind.
You will only lose a couple MPH on topend but you wont see a difference and may gain a mile or 2 loaded to fish!!!!.....You will gain ALOT on holeshot and mid range punch!!!!...I run 1.75 on my motor and have about the same H.P. as you!!!
Fish mid to low 90 and very high 90's light

    Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (1outlaw)

Tony, I understood, but just wanted ya to be aware that the same props wouldn't work.. If ya had 3 or 4 props that worked with your 1.62 then it could be a pain trading them out..

Jason, I do ? the thought of loosing top end though, by the #ers if the 1.62 gears turn a 28 to 6500 and the 1.75 gears turn a 32 to 6500, IF (and it is a Big if) the slip stays close to the same then by rights you should go faster with the 32 at the same rpm.s

I do know bigger props can be less efficiant so that may be the difference... I will be finding out here soon!!

Lou, im only guessing at losing on the top end...I ran 1.62's on mine and got the EXACT same number with the same prop.....I wouldnt call the tetst scientific....You know i just trashed my lower so i had the option to go 1.62...I chose 1.75 because i didnt believe i was losing top speed staying with 1.75......Keep in mind..I consider my rig a fishing boat and not a true 100+ rig.....It takes the right conditions to get triple digits

    Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (1outlaw)

I'm with you Jason. It would be nice to run a hundred, but that is second on my list. The important thing to me is that my go-fast fishing boat is able to do that job to its best potential. Jason, the thing you said about gears and big props has got my attention. I don't want to do anything to increase chance of problems. My luck is chit, my other lower unit only had 61 hours on it. Anyway, the gear thing just popped into my head last week and thought I would get you guys input on the situation. Ya'll know better than me

I would not go with the 1.75 not worth the money.
If you want low end and mid range then just drop down in pitch. If you want top end then go up. You can have the same hole and mid with both gears just change your prop size to match what you want to do. You can bang the limiter with a 32 and 1.75 are with a 28 and 1.62 your choice.

Tony, i think its a toss up...I like my 1.75 gears but propping it has been a bitch.....I fish with a 32 performer 4 ET....To get a good top end number requires a 34+ prop...The florida contingent has a strong prop and gear case selection along with multiple brands...Do like we do....Buy both

    Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (BigTone,Ar.)

I would go with 1.62 gears because of better prop selection. the difference is about 2" pitch in props. I fish wiht a 26" pitch, so I have great holeshot even with a full load, and still run 80s. It takes a 32" to keep me off the limiter, it would take a 34" to keep me off the militer with a 1.75 lower, and they are hard to find.

    Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (spider1)

Guess I'm still gonna have to learn the hard way, my backwards math still says if ya turn a bigger prop more rpm's then your gonna go faster, not to mention a better hole shot and mid with the bigger prop and 1.75 gears!!

One thing I do agree on is the reliabilty issue after a while with the bigger props..

Wonder how the holeshot would be with a 28 and 1.75 gears?? Hell My limiter usually kicks me at 80 anyways!

Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (Largemouthlou)

Every prop is different, even the same make and pitch. But if you were all out racing, and could max each out, the lower pitch props with the 1.62 gears would win the speed contest. The lower pitches are slightly more efficient, with less losses to things like the paddle wheel effect and stern lift. (higher pitch props have more stern lift with surfacing props).

But unless you are all out racing, you wouldn't notice the difference.

Lou, I suffer from the 5850 limiter.

Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (John Jackson)

You Florida Boys got all the good toys. I wish you could bring a Sportmaster for a 20" up to the Stroker Rally along with the bolts cause I sure would like to try one on for size. I am of the opinion that this little boat of mine might like a little more height which would let this 30 Performer 4 get some more RPM's. I am about 1-3/4" below now and am hoping for even with or over as long as I can keep water pressure.

    Re: 1.62 0r 1.75 gears in sportmaster (BigTone,Ar.)

When I went with the sm lower, I had the option of 1.62 or 1.75 gears. Kurt recommended the 1.62's based on what numbers and rpm's the Strokers run at the lower elevations. I went with my idea that I would be down on hp and wanted the low and mid range thinking I would be able to prop the boat. I run a 28p Hydro Q4X and a 28p Bravo 1 on the limiter 6350 (88.7), a 30p Q4X at 6250 (92.9) and a 33p Q4X to 5950 (95). If I had it to do over I would reconsider and go with the 1.62's because the used market on the big wheels is very slim and brings top dollar. I have been looking for a used back up for the 33p as it has been fixed twice now and I only use it to put up a big number (for me, not others) then it comes off. I still need a low elevation prop in a 34p ? of something. It seems the smaller props are more readlly available at a more reasonable price. Don't get me wrong, I just want more speed, looking for trips but don't think I will get there where I run. Hope this helps, good luck on your decision.
