    Carpet Questions

I am currently in the middle of recarpeting my Stratos 273 and have a couple of questions.
I am scraping the old contact cement from my compartment lids and some of the original paint on the lids is scraping off also.

Do I need to completely scrape all of the paint off and get to bare metal?

If so, do I need to repaint them prior to applying the new contact cement when I lay carpet or just leave them bare metal and contact cement over them?

Also, I am going to use DAP Weldwood conatact cement to glue everything but the original version is very flamable. Since I will be doing this project in my garage I worry about fumes building up and my hot water heater causing ignition. They make a nonflamable version but am not sure if it is as good. Any thoughts?

Most everything that I have read says to put the contact cement on the carpet and lid and let them dry before applying but I recently was told to put them together when wet so they are workable and then let dry. Anybody tried this?

I would get all of the old adhesive off before you put the new on so you will have a nice smooth surface. I am not sure about the other glue. And I would let them set up about 1/2 way before you put them together that way you can move it a little but it will speed you dry time up.

I recarpeted My boat last summer. It is the 5th boat I have recarpeted. You don't need to get all the paint off of the lids, and you don't need to repaint them if youve got it down to bear metal. I used a product called 3M 08984 Adhesive Cleaner And Remover. If you pour this on the lids and let it sit for a few minutes, your carpet will peel very easily with little effort. When I glue the carpet back on I use 3m Super Trim adhesive. Both of these products are sold at Advance Auto and Oreilys I believe. The 3m Super trim adhesive is expensive but It is easy to use and has a high tack if you use it like the can says. Get the Super Trim adhesive, Not the regular 3M trim adhesive. Spray both surfaces and let it set for 1-5 min. before bonding. Get a rolling pin and go over the top of the lid first, sides second, and inside edges last. I used some of the DAP contact cement, but I felt the Super trim adhesive was much easier, quicker and held better. It is more expensive. Good luck

i wiped all my lids down with acetone after i got the glue , cleans them up nicely, plus gets any glue residue that you might have missed. as far as the fumes i would at least open a door alittle so it would be ventalated some.

Nick...I recarpeted my 98 273 about two years ago. I used Henrys outdoor carpet cement on all the flat surfaces and weldwood contact cement on the lid edges. What did you find when you pulled up the carpet in the (edit) pit area??

If you have any questions give me a shout.

    Thanks for the help everybody.

Not sure I know the area that you are describing. If you are talking about the floor around my console, I pulled the carpet on that years ago. Sprayed on some of the bedliner down there.

Kerosene Is cheap and will work at taking the carpet off. Then wipe down with acetone.
