    prop on a 285 xl 2009

i've got a 2009 285 xl with a 150 opti. i am using a 6" manual jack plate and the 4 bladed 23 p trophy plus prop that came on it. have been messing with the jp some and trying to get the most out of the rig and seem to have it in a pretty sweet spot as far as planing very quickly and water pressure being good. i noticed the other day that with just me onboard, empty livewells and 1/2 tank of fuel i was running around 60 mph ( 2 mph faster in colder air than same setup gave back in the summer, or maybe just the high test no ethanol gas) but the engine seemed over reved it was tacking close to 6800-6900 and the limiter kicked at w.o.t. do yall think i need a bigger prop or have i just got the j.p too high or what? Sure i like to go fast but i dont wanna blow the motor up either.

Not sure why you couldn't run a 25 Tempest. You didn't indicate prop shaft height or Water Pressure at WOT. Might be helpful for other guys with your boat/motor combo. I have a 285 with 150 Johnson and 24 Raker 3 blade. I tried a 25 Tempest but just couldn't get it dialed in.

I will try to measure the shaft height in the morning and post. As for exact pressure I am not positive I am thinkin its around 20

If you can spin a 25 Tempest that's what I'd put on it. That's what I ran on my 285, but I had a 150 Johnson on mine.

The 25 tempest plus is the ticket... had to test in high winds and rough water but I saw 5 more mph rpms at 5600 even and 12 psi water pressure

My 2007 285XL came with a 23M and it wasn't enough prop. I switched to a TR04 worked by Mark and have been very happy with it, but I lost some top end. The handling is 10x better with the 4 blade though. My question is do you have much sliding around of the boat with the Tempest Plus? I'd like to gain my top end back but not lose too much handling.

i think it handled very similar to the trophy plus 23 4 blade with improved holeshot and top end
