    95 201 Pro XL performance

It seems to me that my boat is lacking hole shot and top end (low 60's). It has a 95 200hp Vindicator, no jackplate and the only thing I can tell about the prop is its a Raker with some irregular grinding. I bought the boat used, and the previous owner could not remember the prop size.

    Any suggestion's?

That's still a respectable speed you've got but what kind of RPM's are you seeing right now on top-end?

Here are some very basic suggestions I can think of that may help:

    1. Make sure all motor maintenance is up to date, i.e. plugs, filters, and maybe get a compression check

    2. Add a jackplate- I'd probably stay with a 6" since the boat does have some age on it but if you're confident in the transom you could go all the way to a 10".

    3. Post a pic of the prop on the Prop Forum so it can be identified. If its an original OMC Raker, which it probably is, I'd send it to Mark Croxton to have it cleaned up, balanced and blue printed. If it's a BRP version of the Raker I'd look at finding another prop

I have a good friend who runs an 89 201 XL with a XP 200 on it. We have it running just under 70 on the GPS with a good hole shot and his hull isn't as fast as your 95 model.

    Roybiggens,

    Thanks for the input!

I will get a pic tonight and post it in the next few days.

The maintenance was done when I bought the boat last year, and I plan to take it in again in the next couple of weeks.

I am seeing about 5200-5400 rpm at wot.

Without a plate, you are about right...Low-mid 60's...With a plate ( stay with 6" and you should not have to change the steering cables) you may see mid-upper 60's, but will not see 70 or above without some motor mods...

Pull the prop, the pitch numbers are on the hub on the back of the prop...

    Re: 95 201 Pro XL performance (201pro)

Okay...story gets worse. The prop is a Raker 14-1/2 x 24. Had the prop rebuilt by Mike Hoods. Boat will now go top speed at 52.7 gps. Tried a friends Renegade 13 x 25. It gets me 55 gps at 5500 rpm....

    Hmmm...thinking new prop???

Suggestions on prop or would the jack plate be the best choice?

Are these speeds gps or by speedo?
The 94 I had would GPS at 70.5 on a good day. RPM @ 5800 turning a 24 Raker repitched to a 25 on a 6 inch jackplate. Most days it would run about 68. To improve your holeshot you can have vent holes put put in prop. Those boats are very heavy and with a 200 the holeshot is going to be a little slow no matter what you do. A 4 blade prop like a Renagade 25 can help the holeshot but not the top end. The 4 blade will be about 2-4 mph slower than the 3 blade. You will have to decide which one you want, holeshot or topend.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Those speeds are gps. max rpm according to my engine manual is 5500. I have heard that Raker prop's will sometimes drop significant speed after being re-worked...

I would be happy with mid 60's at WOT, but maybe with no jackplate and age of engine that is not realistic. I am real concerned that the Raker is not performing as I got more top end speed out of the 4 blade than the 3 blade Raker. You are correct on the holeshot with the 4 blade. The boat literally jumped up on a plane surprisingly fast.

I wonder what a 4 blade 27 pitch would do? in theory, that should get more top end speed correct? Or am I going to over-pitch my 200?

I have the same boat/motor 94 model. No jackplate and an old Renegade 4 blade prop 25 pitch running 5800rpm to 70.3gps. I would think a newer, better prop would get you in the upper 60's. I've heard alot of good about the Fury...

Just a thought, but do you have a hotfoot? If so, you may want to check the cable and make sure it is adjusted properly and your carbs are opening up all the way. I have a 400 Javelin with a 200 Evinrude that turns my 25 Renegade to 5800 rpms. Even with no plate, I would think your boat should run somewhere close to the mid 60's.
