ETEC 200 HO.. Water Pressure/"HOT" Alarm Questions

Launched the boat on Saturday Morning and let it idle for a fairly long time while I helped a guy get his trailer up off the end of the ramp. Probably about 10 minutes. Then I started out for about 1/2 mile at about 1200 RPM. Jumped it on plane at around 2300 RPM and went about 1/2 mile. HOT alarm sounded and it shut down. Idled just a minute and the alarm cleared. I also shut it off and restarted. No problems the rest of the day but I never could get more than about 13-14 lbs. of pressure even at WOT and the engine buried.

I ran it again on Sunday and saw about the same thing on the WP but the alarm never sounded.

Water temp. both days around 41-44 degreees. Air temp on Sat was about 50. Sunday was just a little warmer.

My questions: It seems that there was some discussion on here a while back about updates for something similiar. anybody know anything about that

Also, do ETECs have some kind of pressure system controlled by the ECM that would reduce the WP when it's cold? It seems that I've been seeing igher pressures until Saturday. I run the boat fairly often so I think I would have noticed a difference earlier.

I don't have my SN and model handy at the moment. I can get it later but it'll be a couple of days.

    Thanks for the help!

The pressure control valve (blow off valve) is not dependent on temperature.

There are some bulletins concerning false overheat alarms, but they are for a limited range of models and serial numbers. That is why we need your motor's information.

Re: ETEC 200 HO.. Water Pressure/"HOT" Alarm Questions (dodgeman9)

On my 07 basscat, my rude gave me a constant beep a couple of weekends ago. I took it to the dealer and they found water in fuel. Apparently the rudes will constant beep for overheat and water in fuel if I'm not mistaken.Might be in your best interest to pull off the fuel filter and inspect for water, also check gas tank.Ethanol blended fuel and spearing a couple of waves was to blame on my boat. Hope this helps and you can save some $$$

Your cooling system should be checked out completely and the temps tested per service bulletin 2005-05 S. Your tech can also call dealer service hotline on how to check, repair, or replace a problematic "blow off" valve assembly.

Have you gotten into any weeds, muck, sand, etc. lately?

There hasn't been any software updates since '06 for your motor, it is # 94040HO.

If you had water in the fuel the "CHECK ENGINE light would come on.

IF your motor overheated the HOT or ENGINE TEMP light would come on.

Whenever there is a problem like one of the above, the warning horn sounds for 10 seconds and one of the 4 warning lights will come on to tell you what kind of problem.

If you have the I-Command gauges with the digital readout, it will spell out the problem.

You do have the warning lights as required to keep your motor in warranty, right????

Re: ETEC 200 HO.. Water Pressure/"HOT" Alarm Questions (SEAHORSE)

I have had the same problem with mine but a little different. On mine I have to get the engine above 5000 rpms then I can cut back to cruising. If I don't get it above 5000 and run it like that for say 1/4 mile or less, then the water temp alarm will go off. I boat my motor used and the guy who had it before me never had this problem. I have had the problem ever since I bought it. The highest water press I have seen is 13. I have not seen any better and I have raised the motor and come back down. I have taken it to the dealer 2 and they hook the computer up and call the EVin techs and they say to raide the motor. Going to take it back in next week and I think a tech is coming down to look at it.

    Thanks Seahorse!

All the lights and buzzers are connected and operational. The "HOT" alarm was the one that came on.

I'll take it to the mechanic.

    Thanks again!

    Bassmeister,
this is my team partner and it has also caused me aggrivation since we practice out of 2- boats but he seems to be dealing with the motor more than the fishing, By the way no ill feelings on the E-TEC but very hard to deal with even if mine is OK.

Re: ETEC 200 HO.. Water Pressure/"HOT" Alarm Questions (Bassmeister)

Fishing buddy just went through this for almost 8 months. It started after the update was performed that changed the overheat from like 212 to 192. To make a long story short it ended up being a poppet valve. Etec also replaced his water pump at the same time to cover some of his troubles and it ended up being very worn. This was 2 months ago and not one alarm since. It would do it every trip at a good cruising speed and would shut off the motor. Restart and it was fine. I would bet this will cure yours too. Good luck.

Does e-tec have a poppet valve? That was one of my first thoughts but I was told that they do nnot have a poppet valve.

A poppet valve is a pressure relief valve and Yamaha seems to be the company that named it a "poppet". Evinrude calls theirs a pressure relief valve or a "blow off" valve.

    from a previous post:
