Sounds like you might need to bring the motor up and what prop are you running? Whats your prop to pad distance right now?

I have the exact boat and also had this same problem. I ended up raising the motor to 2 1/4" below the pad and found a 27M to run. I now run 71-72 with 2 tournament loaded.

What prop are you running, and how much setback do you have?

Sounds about right loaded to fish. As was said sounds like you might need to come up a tad with the motor.

Just as you have figured out with your buddy, balance is important to good handling.

Get you a JP and you'll be amazed at the difference in handling when set up right.

I 2nd that...06 with a 200 Merc. It didn't have a jackplate and scared me to death...plus the numbers sucked. Added the jackplate, got it really "dialed in" and the difference was amazing.

Only thing now is I'm turning too many rpms with a 26p tempest...might need to look at a 27

I have the same boat/motor and with a 26 tempest I can run 71-72 loaded to fish with 2. Sounds like you are right on.
