Onboard battery charging and fire danger

I am new to bass boats and recently acquired a 1995 Stratos. It has 3 batteries and an onboard charger all of which, as you know, are in the same compartment as the gas tank. There is a slight odor of gas in the compartment. What is the danger of fire from this setup and what precautions can I take to make it safe when I am charging the batteries?

I would appreciate your collective wisdom on this.

    Thanks, Bob

Re: Onboard battery charging and fire danger (bobstratos)

I leave the hatch open and the charger hooked up when not in use... fire is always a possibility if the charger malfunctions but knock on wood I havent had any problems...
