    Skeg Question - Lightning LU

After having an uneventful trip yesterday, I get the boat on the trailer I noticed that most of my skeg is gone and one of the ears of my prop is dinged up. The prop can be fixed, but my question is about the broken skeg.... can these be repaired or is it time for a new LU housing? Motor is a 2005 Rude 225HO (DI) with the Lightning LU. Here's a pic of the damage

Bad thing is, I have no idea what I hit or when I hit it. After I dropped my brother off at another ramp, I could tell something just wasn't quite right when I was running back to my ramp. Now I know why...

It may have just broke. The piece of the skeg is likely what dinged up the prop.

    Got insurance?

Tn wintertime draw is nice isnt it ? The prop shop here in Knoxville said the drought has done wonders for his business.

Re: Skeg Question - Lightning LU (Bugs)

I was trying to figure out if it's even worth filing a claim on. If I can have a new one welded on, I'd go ahead and do that out of pocket. A new case.... definitely insurance time.

I am not a welder but I think in order to weld that properly and then grind it, there would be a lot of heat transmitted through the metal to the gear oil, to the bearings, to the seals etc.

Yes, they can be welded. It's best to disassemble before doing it though.

Re: Skeg Question - Lightning LU (gearcaseman)

Thanks Eddie. I'm not even going to attempt it myself. I'd end up tearing up more stuff and having to pay somebody to fix that to I'm probably just going to take it to the dealer and let them fix it/have it fixed. Actually, this is a case you had built for Flipping57 a couple years or so ago.

I'll be darned, what a small world! Hope it works out for you. I've just recently gotten a bunch of used H.O. housings in the other day. These things seem to be very popular. Hope yours is running good.

Re: Skeg Question - Lightning LU (gearcaseman)

I wouldn't want to weld one, I would get a new one. But thats just me.
