    Can a 273 with a 150 hit 70?

i have a stock 99 stratos 273 with the 1999 Evinrude 150, a Raker 24 pitch prop and NO jackplate, with 2 guys and gear with a 1/2 a tank of fuel, we hit 64 MPH GPS, but it just starts to chine at that speed (worse with just me), it seems to have a little more, with a jackplate and one person, is it possable with the right setup it can reach 70?
i pickin up a 6" high jacker jackplate soon, hopin it will help with some of the chinewalk.
    thanks for any info.

You'll need to spin the 24 Raker at 6000 rpm to reach 70. I think 67 to 68 is more likely with two aboard if you can turn 6000 rpm. Loaded light, maybe 69 to 70. Mid sixties is gonna be a good number for that ride.

Jeff 70 is setting the bar high for your rig. Not saying it cant be done, but it wont happen with 2 guys and fishing gear. I dont even know if the ficht will spin to 6000, my old faststrike 150 wouldnt go past 5600 with a 24 raker.

My old Renegade 18 ran the same #'s your running. You may could try a 26 raker or tempest and see if you pick up some mph. I tried like heck to get to 70 when I had my Javelin and never could get close.

The plate will help with chine allowing you to raise the motor up, without low water pickups around 3.5"-3.25" prop to pad is about the limit on height from past expeirence if i remember correctly.

    Good luck man.

The 273 with a 150 is a rocket but can be a hand full to drive. I would think 70 is possible but only under perfect conditions...extra light load, cool weather(promotes max HP) cool water temp (promotes less slip) and the pad to motor height and offset must be fine tuned. Throw in a balanced and blueprinted prop and Yes I think 70 is possible...a tail wind going down current would also help but that would be asking for too much

In all seriousness I believe it is possible with the right conditions/set up...but don't expect to see 70 every time you hit the water

That would be a fun rig.

Yeppers, I had the pleasure of testing a 273 once after someone had some work done on a 150 Johnson. It had a splash of gas, no tackle and a starting battery. It was a handfull to drive loaded like that.

I don't know how fast it was, all it had was a standard speedo. It was "fast enough".

6" Jackplate and experiment with motor height. I would use 2.5 inches below the pad as my starting point. When you find the sweet spot for the motor height you will be able to have more control/prevent chinewalk thus resulting in a speed increase

Jeff...I have to agree with Gene's post. With those conditions I was able to hit 71.9 GPS and that was with a 24p Raker.

What kind of #'s with the raker 24p did you get? I had mine w raker 24 two aboard and 1/2 fuel. 68.7 ( i thinking thats correct) gps. It think it was still gaining a little, but if was a little rough and little rocket was getting a little much to drive in that conditions. I want to try a 26 raker also. I was truning 5800 witht he speed stated up top.

    Re: (JeffA)

Jeff...how is the hole shot with the Raker? I know they are fast props, but I finally sold mine because of the blowout (as it was coming over on plane).

If you want to set a best top speed with your boat, get that jackplate on ASAP and run in this nice cool air and water. You won't see those # in the summer.

i have 6" a jackplate on it, with a low water pickup, i can still crank the motor up quite a bit.
the hole was "ok" at best with the 26 on it, we tried a 24p Trophy plus, a 24p Raker, a 25p Renagade, the best "all around" prop was the Renagade, the fastest was the 26 Raker, i'm pretty sure if i took out the rest of my gear, and didn't have a 5 or so gallons in the livewell and not to metion the whitecaps out there, i pretty sure we could have broke 70..
i'm happy now, i'll put the 25 gade on there and run it.

    Re: (JeffA)

In my opinion my Gade is the best all around prop. Great hole shot and good in rough water and handling. I really like it!!!! But....the 24p Fury sure runs right up there. Also a great hole shot and a little bit faster on top end. I'll be sending that prop out to Mark for a B&B and will probably be running that prop on a regular basis. If you get a chance, try one out, I think you'll like it!!!!

i'm pretty sure i'm going to stay with the 25p Renagade, i'll keep the 26p for the fun speed runs.
