Mercury hands down... Dan![]()
ETEC HO by 2 mph on an Evo. Plain ol 201 the XS and HO are close. The HPDI is last out of the 3.
If you are even a little concerned about fuel and oil consumption, the hpdi will drink twice as much oil and will be worse on gas as well. If that does not matter, then all three are good motors.

I'm partial to the 250 HO as I have two of them, awesome motors.

Not that I have personally run all three on the exact same hull. The only basis I have are the multitude of B&WB write-ups. I have NEVER seen where gas and oil consumption were THAT much different between the 3. No way on the "twice as much". A very poor set-up rig compared to a very well-set-up rig maybe. But if they are set-up for optimum performance I just find that statement very tough to digest.![]()

Oh yeah, in this order:
1. 250HO ETEC or a Phase III 250 Vmax HPDI
2. there is a 3rd choice???![]()

Darth,
I, like you have not run both engines (250 hpdi and 250 proxs) on the same exact hull, but I do not see how that matters when it comes to oil and fuel consumption. Although I would like to see that comparison. I had a 06' 250 hpdi on a skeeter 20-I for almost 3 years and now have an 08' Stratos 201XL with a Merc 250proxs. I have made several of the same runs in my new boat that I have made many times with the Skeeter and I am positive that the oil consumption is at least twice as good and the fuel consumption is at least 20% better.
Before I had the hpdi I had an HO and that thing was so good on oil I thought it made oil somewhere. When I got the Skeeter, I could not believe how much oil I used. I even brought it back to the dealer to make sure it was working right.
My new boat has the smartcraft system so I know exactly how much fuel I am using, unless it is not accurate.
Todd set up the Stratos so I know it is set up right, and the Skeeter was set up perfect as well. But now you got me thinking. Are some bass boats more fuel efficient than others. That would be an interesting comparison to see the same motor on 4 different boats to see if it got better fuel numbers on different hulls.

From personal testing the smarcraft "fuel Used" function is extremely accurate. Filled up last week and the MerMonitor said 23.4 gallons used and it took 23.6 to fill it up.
As far as different rigs mileage ...it`s all about basic physics....It takes more energy to move 2000# than 1000# (allison). Having said that a Mercury uses the same fuel at 5000RPM on Startos or Allison. It just moves the Ally a lot farther down the lake. There is a lot to be said for the Hull design and efficiency. Drag of the amount of hull actually in the water. Many factors involved but the computer controlled fuel and oil systems of the newer engines are fairly constant regardless of Hull.
I have always been told 250 HO ETEC on EVO but from my own personal experience NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anything but.

Weight, hull design and effeciency, lower-unit design and effeciency, prop effeciency. set-up sweet spots etc.....
I agree, it would be interesting to use the same exact (see particular) motor and rig it to different hulls and see what the difference would be. It would be a total @ss pain of a test with all the rigging and re-rigging but it would be the only way to get a pure result by eliminating any variances of different motors. Prop-choices and set-back differences would play too.
my fishing partner just bought a like new 2008 201 XL with a 225 Evinrude HO and that thing runs like a sewing machine..I have been a merc guy for along time but will be checking them out when looking for new boat. His will spin a 27 tempest to the limiter at 74-75mph I think he could spin a B&B 28 from waht I have seen so far they seem like great engines,,very quite, hardly uses gas or oil, just not very good out of the hole.![]()
