Original Prop Size Needed...

I purchased a used boat two or three years ago - 1993 274 F/S (17'-9" long fish and ski) with a Johnson Silver Star V6 150 hp motor. I mostly fish, but sometimes pull tubes in the summer. The prop on that (when I got it) was a stainless steel 4-blade shooter at 13-1/4" x 27pp. I screwed that prop up Friday night (hit something) and instead of getting it repaired I'm thinking about switching. I've had advice (on the prop page) to get a Raker 14.5 x 22 pitch, and I purchased a "like new" model on e-bay over the weekend. I also had input from a local prop shop that said the 27 pitch was way off for the 150hp Johnson. So...I'm thinking that the 22 pitch should be better, but I just heard from the e-bay seller that they had already sold the prop to a walk-in customer and they're refunding my money - I'm back at trying to buy a prop.

Now my question - does anybody know what prop came on the original setup for this boat? No jack plates or anything...just the original Stratos set up. I never got this over 50 mph and I'm wondering if the prop was the reason. I would be most appreciative of the original make and size. Thanks, B

The V-6 motors normally come to the dealer without a prop, then the dealer installs a prop. I agree the standard 22 Raker would be a good choice if you fish and use the boat for water toys as well. If the motor is still good and strong I would also have to test a 23 Tempist, I ran that one on my last Champ F/S for four years with a 150 Yamaha. I pulled my son many a mile on water toys with that boat! It ran an honest 58 GPS any day at 5800 RPMS no JP. I would want your motor propped to turn about 5500 RPMS at WOT? I'm sure an old OMC expert like Fred can hook you up with what the motor should be turning.

Be careful with those "re worked props" some people are FANTASTIC at repairs and others can make one look great while destroying the props performance.

    I have a 93 274 but it is not a fish/ski I use a 25 renegade or 24 raker and I have a 6 in jack plate. I would agree that a 23 renegade or 22 raker would be a good place to start. I also have a evinrude 150

I have always heard that those old shooter props were overstated, that is a 27 shooter would probably be equal to a 25 in another prop.

You might be able to turn a 24 or 25 but I'm guessing that the fish/ski is a little heavier than the non-fish/ski.

What was you max RPM with the Shooter?

I had to put the old prop back on - it ran okay. I went out and did two tests, one loaded and one light. Since it is a 5-person fish and ski, I put my wife and three kids in there with me (probably maxed out the weight limit and then some?). For this condition in fairly calm water, we got up to 45 mph and the engine was turning 4700 rpms with a water pressure of 20 psi. Then I dropped my wife and two sons off at a pier, and kept my youngest son with me (my 12 year old fishing buddy). In this condition, we ran in fairly calm water at 50 mph and the rpms were only at 4600 with a water pressure of 21 psi. In both of these conditions, I had to trim the motor to get it running smooth (I guess what I would call optimum) and with no pull on the steering wheel, etc. So, yes the 4-blade shooter at a 27 pitch appears to be bogging us down. In addition, since my entire family only goes out a couple of times each year, I had not noticed this - it took forever to get the bow down when we were first gunning it to get up and going. With just my son and I, it didn't take near as long. Maybe it was the extra load in the back seat? Either way, I think the over pitched prop is hurting that too. So...top speed could probably be better, along with hole shot and rpms should go to 5500 at WOT per the owner's manual. Now...what prop do you guys think I should switch to?

    Thanks, B

try a 23 renegade and 22 or 24 raker.. This is a cheap one to consider even though I dont think it's your best choice>>> http://www.bbcboards.net...93442
