For line, Ive used a variety but most recently 8lb. Maxima Ultragreen & 6/8 lb. Trilene 100% fluorocarbon..Did just get some 10 lb Sunline Supernatural to try next.
Leader material?? You dealing with toothy critters up there?
Nope not anything toothy I prefer a braid mainline and I have been having fluoro breakage problems.

Same here. Supernatural is an awesome line!!!
Always toothy critters up here Steve. I like a curado 51 E with ten pound Fluorocarbon on a Dobyns Champion 704 CB or 705 Glass Cb depending on the weight of the jerkbaits.

Nothing wrong with a little mono/copoly leader...Give you a little shock absorbsion too for those mean brown fish.

I like a heavier line and mono!

I prefer a shorter jerkbait rod so I use the Dobyns 684c this way I don't hit the water when I sweep/jerk the bait. Depending on depth I want to fish I vary my line size and type flouro or mono normally 6-10 Pound test. Flouro sinks so it will go deeper, mono floats so it keeps the bait higher.
If I'm fishing more open water and want a longer rod I use the 704CB GLass Dobyns.
All with Daiwa TD Advantage 6.3:1 Reel.

why isnt this topic pinned like all the other setup rods/reels? ive been wanting to hear peoples rigs and now here it is. I like a shorter 6'2 M rod and 10# fluoro but I am open to changing to 8# and even switching to mono if you jerkbait experts think its better. keep the opinions coming.![]()

I like a medium power moderate action baitcasting rod with a parabolic action I have found that this is just right for me for treble hooked jerkbaits and lets them get it good before you set the hook.I also like a rod that has enough backbone to control a fish when it surges under the boat or a big fish that comes up and tries to shake its head.I like the rod to be 6'6".I use a revo reel on this rod with 10lb Berkley 100% fluorocarbon line. After my last jerkbait rod broke after 13 years of use it took me 3 years serching and trying different rods to finally find what I was looking for and I found it in a Falcon HD 6'6" med rod.The nice thing was the rod sales for under $100
ttt. can we pin this with the other favorite rod/reels setups?

6'9" Carrot Stix Micro guide rod with a Daiwa Sol and 10 lb Spiderwire or Cajun fluoro.. The Sol is a tad slow on the gear ratio but I've supertuned mine and upgraded to orange seal spool bearings and it can absolutely launch jerkbaits, and cast smaller jerkbaits very well...

Gloomis Jerkbait Rod 6'3 with an Abu Garcia Revo and 12 pound P-Line. Just got this yesterday so haven't tried it yet.

Have you tried this outfit yet? I am leaning towards this rod. Have a St.croix Legend tourney at 6'6" and a 6'9" med jerkbait loomis. But the 6'6" st.croix is discontinued, so I am thinking about the 6'3" loomis.

I tried it yesterday and really like it. They make a couple different models of the GLoomis Jerkbait rod and I got the smaller 6'3 model in medium action. It casts reasonably well and imparts great action on the bait. They make a longer version if you want it to cast farther. This rod is very accurate and it does not wear you out twitching and ripping the bait all day. The medium action also seems to keep the bait from getting ripped from the fish's mouth and I didn't have one throw it at all yesterday. I got about 10 or so smaller bass on it and it worked well controlling the fish. Haven't been able to try it on a big fish though yet.
