    07 285 xl performance

i have a couple questions about my boat this is my first bass boat so im new to driving and im not sure what to expect as far as performance. i have a 07 285 xl with a 150 yamaha vmax carb with a 3 blade 23 pitch aluminum prop no jack plate. i have about 5 hours on the motor so its still getting broke in and i am mixing oil with the gas like the manual says i should. my first question is about trimming up the motor. when i get on plane i start to trim up the motor my rpms raise without any more throttle but my speed only increases about 2 mphs. when i open the throttle all the way im only running 51mph. that is with 2 guys and a full tank of gas and a tourny load but it seems like i should be faster than that. my next question is will performance improve after the breakin is over? what about a stainless prop?im not sure how low the engine is mounted below the pad thanks for any help

Re: 07 285 xl performance (doug suth)

It should have came standard with a stainless prop. Yamaha 23M pro series, 23 Mercury Tempest, or 23 Power Tech TR04 are all good choices. I have the same boat/motor (6" jackplate)with a 23M and 23 TR04, both run 59 +/- with 2 people at about 5500-5600 rpm. Some folks have had better results but this is all mine has got in her. I have tried about 6 different props from 23P-25P and all jack plate heights.
I would be calling your dealer and asking why he didn't give you the correct prop.

    Look here:http://www.boattest.com/oem/te...i=yes
    http://www.yamaha-motor.com/as...r.pdf

The 59 mph is gps with 2 people 3/4 gas. Speedo reads 64.

Your biggest drawback right now is the aluminum prop. That rig with a 150 should not have left the dealership with an aluminum prop. Get the right prop and will be a lot easier dialing it in.

Congrats on the 285 though. It's an excellent boat.

With a 23m I hit 60 fairly easy. You probably also need some driving time to get the most out of her.

    I have an 07 285 XL with a 150 Opti. I'm running a 23p tempest and a 6 inch
    jack plate.

This past Sat. I was running 64-65 (speedo) with full gas and tourney load.

Right now prop shaft is 3 1/4 below pad.

    I love this boat!!

I can't believe that somebody sold you an alum. prop on that rig.....That is just aweful
I had the same boat only a few years older, but it was a great ride and would do 60gps with 3 people in the boat.

    Just to set things straight...

Up here in the land of tin boats, all the dealers think that boats should have aluminum props, don'cha know (Fargo accent).

I'm not sure if it because they are cheap, or don't know how to properly set up a bass boat. Maybe a bit of both.

Mine came the same way, and I had to tell them to put a 23 Pro Series on.
