    Speedo problem ?

Pulled my 04 486SF out of storage and the speedo was showing 60 MPH. Took the boat on the water and speedo would work but idle / 0 mph is 60 MPH. Any ideas?
    Thank you

    Re: Speedo problem ? (486SF)

There is a tiny hole on the front of your lower unit about 2-3" up from the prop shaft. It will get plugged with trash. Take a 1/16" drill bit and drill the trash out by hand. Don't use a drill.

    Re: Speedo problem ? (285XL)

Thanks I will check that but why would the speedo show 60 mph when the boat is out of the water? It is like 60 mph is 0 mph on the speedo.

When your traveling the water pressure in the tube makes your speedo needle move. When a piece of trash enters the hole while you are traveling, the pressure is trapped in the tube. When you clean the hole out the water trapped in there will run out.

Well, scrap all of the above instructions. Any chance that the boat was exposed to freezing temps? Any water that could have been left in the speedo probably froze and ruined your speedo. This happened to my water pressure guage once.

    Re: Speedo problem ? (StratosDadRI)

Thanks for info. Freezing temps is most likely the reason. My boat was stored inside (but not heated) garage. This winter in Wisconsin we had temps in 30 plus below zero Just want to make sure there is nothing else I could have tried before ordering a replacement. Thanks again.
