Noticed that the adjustment nut had backed out on my footpedal. How critical is it to get this adjusted to the correct length?

It needs to be correct....This is the stop for the throttle cable. If it backs off, you will not get full throttle cable travel and the engine will be low on power...If it moves in, you will be putting undue stress on the cable, which could cause it to break...
