    Scored pistons

Finally got the 1999 225 Ficht motor tore down and found #1 piston had a broken ring. Also found that #3 had some pretty good scoring on the piston and #5 looks like it had just started to score also. Any thoughts as to why just one bank of cylinders had this problem?

    Thanks

    Re: Scored pistons (Extra260)

It could have been caused by that bank of cylinders not coming up to temperature, causing carbon to build up more on that side. If you are rebuilding the motor make sure to replace both thermostats and the poppet valve.

Depending on the damage to the cylinder, you may be better off sleeving #1 and #3 and sticking with stock size, and hone #5. Your machine shop can tell you better.
