Hard starting Johnson

I am having a tough time getting my 225 to start when it first drops in the lake. It literally takes 20 minutes to get it to fire. You pump the primer ball until it gets hard and then it cranks for about 10 seconds, then repeat about 10 more times. After it fires it runs great all day without a hiccup. Anything to look into to remedy?

My 254 has a 70 HP Evinrude,that runs like a top,but it can take an hour to get it to fire once it is in the water. Then it starts right up all day long. I do not have any trouble starting it any longer.
I learned NOT to pump the ball,and do a quick push in of the key,and turn to start. It fires right up. My motor floods very easily if I do anything else. Try it,and it may correct your problem.

he is partially right, for a 225 you need to pump the ball since you have either had it tilted on a transom saver or on the motor bracket. then you push in the key and hold it in you should hear a click hold it in for 10 seconds or maybe 20 then turn the key to start her up. this is for a carbed engine , if you are having trouble and it is a ficht or a dfi you need to take it to the dealer or certified repair place as you may have a fuel pump going out.

Thanks so much guys. I had no idea that you pushed the key in. I just pumped the crap out of her repeatedly and cranked till she fired. These forums are a life saver.

I am not sure what pusing the key in does,but To me it seems like it shoots some fuel in and chokes the motor. I stall say do not pump andthing..push the hey in for 3 seconds..then turn the key.
Mine went from impossible to start to starting on the first try. I even took my Stratos to the dealer and had his adjust the carbs,but it was how I was trying to start the motor,and not carb problems. Hope this helps

pushing the key in IS the choke on a carb motor. Trison, try pushing your key in as you are running down the lake and see what happens.

On a carburetor motor pushing the key in is how you activate the choke. If you listen closely you can hear a click and that is from the electric choke engaging. Pull the cowl off and push in on the key and you will see movement at the carburetors and hear the choke kick in...or at least you could on the 70hp Johnson I used to have.

I have a 2001 Johnson 150 Carb and I to had trouble getting it to start when I first bought it. I found out it was my own fault. If yout trim the motor down until the top of the cowl is level witht he water and it IS ok to pump the bulb once to make sure it is tight the push the key in and turn. It will still take about 3 turns of the key but it will start right up on that third turn.

I will try that. Is that all pushing the key in does? Does it inject fuel also?
Even after I took the boat to C & O,it is very touchy because it floods it it gets too much gas

I had a 2000 225johny ho and the best way to do it is pump ball up hard,turn key on and push it in for 5 seconds and while still pushin in crank motor it will fire right up. then keep key pushed in for a second let off if it starts idlin like its gonna die push and hold key in again till runnin good let off.after the first start motor would fire up with a flick of the key.

well i have right the opposite my will start fine when unloaded and run great, but after i fish awhile it will start right back up till you hit the hotfoot. then i have to choke it and set and play with the throttle to clear it up. i have had carbs rebuilt twice. just dont know. oh its a 96-150- johnson.

Well hell let me jump in. I usually get out once a month. Before I put it in the water I pump the ball until hard. Drop her in. Turn the key for about 3 seconds. Then I give her a little gas push in the choke and she fires right up. I'll run her for about 10-15 seconds at around 1500 rpms then she is fine for the rest of the day.

If I pump my ball,my engine will not start for a month. this is after I took it to
C & O for a tune-up.

Well at least that would save me the trouble of pumping up the ball as it would already be hard.
