    295 pro xl

A friend of mine has a 2001 295 Pro xl with a 200 johnson on it...runs a 23 raker that has been reworked and more cup added...he says that his rpms are alittle over 6000 and that he has blow out sometimes on takeoff...He said that he was not sure on the height of the motor but he said that it is all the way down on the jackplate...Where should he start 3 1/4" below pad? Is this prop the right one, or does he need a 25P...I'm a Champ guy so I'm clueless...Thanks He also said that motor will shutoff after hitting the rev limiter and he has to turn the key off and back on to restart?

under proped, try a 24 raker or a 25 tempest and tell him to let off the heavy foot, if he wants go to a 26 raker that will help keep his rpms down then he can work on the plate but the 23 is way under proped for that boat and motor

Horrible setup......the 295 is a great rig and very fast for what it is.

I wouldn't be suprised to see a 26 raker 2 work out good on his rig....either way, the 23 has to go....worked or not.

5800 is a good rpm for the 200 carbed engine. 3.25 is a good starting spot.

    Re: 295 pro xl (chris_ken23)

I am currently running this same model boat (295 PE / 200 Johnson) - no jackplate

I run a 13 1/2 X 25 Renegade, 4 blade and turn right at 6 grand W.O.P throttle. That only gets me about 63 mph by GPS w/ full tourament load. Never had the propped worked. I do kinda like the 4 blade 4 rough water...

Should I consider the 26 Raker or get my current prop worked to pick up some MPH and maybe lessen the rpm's i am turning? Also, I have heard these boats run well w/ a 6" plate - is this something I should consider too?

    Thanks for any advice guys

cane, first get the jackplate. a good not to expensive one is the 5 1/2" hydro-dynamics from pitstop marine, less than 200 dollars shipped to your door. I do suggest the upper transom plate which will add 18 dollars more, but will help with stress cracks that may appear if you do not have on since it distrubitutes the stress of the motor tourqe over a wider area hense not only in one or 2 places. easy to install especially if you have a motor lift ( get one at northern hydrolics ) for about 50-75 dollars nothing fancy just a good 1000 lb hoist. will NOT repeat NOT (and I will repeat this again for the people who persist in saying you need to) you do NOT need to disconnect any steering, gas /oil or any sort of lines from the engine to do it. It will take you and a bud probably a couple hours to do it you will also need a hoist ring for a johnny/rude but you can get that from the dealer for a decent price and then if you want to change motors or whatever you have one.
attach the plate to the boat and then the motor to the plate second or 3rd from the top hole. dont forget to seal the bolts that go thru the transom with marine sealent.

then my advise is to see what your prop will do start playing at 4 1/2 inches below and then work your way up with an eye on the water pressure and rpms. then if you want after getting it dialed in maybe buy a used tempest or a raker. and play with them. have fun then just watch out for the stumps on marion.( but then Mark on the props board works wonders with bent and masacated props )

hrtwl - that is some great advice. thanks a bunch. I thought my set up could be improved a little, it sounds like, from your advice, I was right. I am going to invest in the jackplate and the other things you mentioned. Bet you $$ soon as I do, Marion will eat them right off

thanks again for the great advice - once i get your suggestions made, i will update with results

    Re: 295 pro xl (lkhartwl)

I cannot believe i found this post - i thought i was going to have to re-write all of this stuff.

wanted to just give you and update and pick your brain a little more. First off, I took your advice and recently added a 6" plate. Height is 4.5 below pad. With the same prop i mentioned above I am now getting 63.2, but I am turning an awful lot of RPM (i hit 6000 and backed off with pedal left). My water pressure was between 25 and 35 the entire time i was on plane. What would you suggest my next move be? I was thinking my pressure is high, but i cannot move up because my RPM are so high already. Do i need to move to a 26 or 27 pitch prop? Or what would you think about having the 25p i am running noe - worked to a 26? Sorry for all the questions, but you gave me really good advice last time and I just want to make sure I move in the right direction when I move - have not set a boat up by myself before. Thanks and please let me know any thoughts you may have or if i left any info out you may need.

Get a 26 Raker II. You will need to move the engine up some if you measured correctly.

    Re: 295 pro xl (CanepoleSC31)

just wanted to post the results. I ran a 24 and a 26 raker. had much better hole shot with the 24 and better top end. once i filled the livewells and a full load it got my rpms down to around 5800-5900 rpms. Moved t he plate up to 3.75 below pad. water pressure is at 20# trimmed out. tope speed so far 67.5. Boat rides so much better with the plate it is unreal. back on the pad where it should be.

happy with the set up - thanks guys for the good advice. made it much easier and quicker to get it dialed in.
