    oxidation and wet sanding issue

my boat was covered by a wrap when I bought it. the gel or lack there of underneath was pretty bad in some areas. I really don't see a ton of oxidation or what I believe is oxidation. I noticed that there was a lot of metal flake on the back side of the wrap when I removed it. I have since removed all of the trim pieces and I can see the original color and gel in the protected areas. I tried wet sanding, rubbing compound, polish and wax on a small area. it did not bring it back to that deep shine like a new boat but it did make enough of an improvement to tell that if I used an orbital buffer and more coats of polish or wax, I might get that nice shine back. the problem I noticed is that the area I tested, now shows more silver flake that the untreated areas. the original finish was that deep dark red. I am sure, I will never get that deep dark color back and the colors below the rub rail look more vibrant than the color on top of the rub rail. my questions are, will the protec products and an orbital buffer make that big of a difference? since some of my metal flake came up with the wrap, is there any gel left? I would guess that I went too deep with the wet sanding, that's why there is more silver showing up in the red metal flake, am I right or wrong in that thinking? I had originally planned on just rewrapping it but my budget resto is getting expensive and trying to restore the finish is looking like a better alternative. if I do achieve some success with restoring the finish, how often will I have to wet sand and polish to keep it looking decent?

    thanks for any input

With the wrap being on there wont be any oxidation,, this is caused by UVs. You really have me puzzled with the flake being on the wrap. Is there any gelcoat also on the wrap?? and Im still trying to figure out how you pulled the flake. You sure this boat had not been repaired and a wrap was applied to cover the shotty work up?
And yes if the flake is turning silver, you went too deep. About the protec, I would contact them, along with photos

To me is sounds like the adhesive chemicals in the wrap began to effect the gelcoat aka pulling out the flake when removing. Boats don't have a clear coat like cars as far as I know to handle the adhesive vinyl and wraps can contain over periods of time.

EXcluding black and white, if it has glitter, it has a clear coat of gel. Its inert to chemicals.
Crank 68, whats your thoughts on this?? Shoot me a pm if you like

Have you ever left a sticker on the gelcoat for 15+ years it begins to remove the gelcoat and pulls up the flake when trying to remove the sticker. Hence why I thought maybe after years the chemicals in the adhesive begin to break down the gelcoat and penetrate the flake.

just my personal observation from removing stickers from gelcoat after years of harsh UV rays

again I'm no professional just adding my observation of cleaning up a boat that I just did this august

interested to see what the real issue is

The boat was faded before the wrap was put on. That's why some of the flake came off.

That makes sense, so in essence the gel was faded and the wrap was then able to pull some flake?
