    Mounting GPS/sonar

    Hi, folks.

I have a 2006 201 pro XL. I took delivery without a front sonar. It has the x135 in-dash. I want to move it to the front and put a GPS/sonar in the dash.

The question I have is this; how do I do an in-dash mounting on the bow? The plate appears to be the same size as the Lowrance 332C and the X135 and I don't see a method to get behind it for the in-dash mount kit.

Also, do I need an additional in-dash mounting kit, and is the 332 a good choice?

I guess I had more than one question. Where is the best place to locate the GPS antenna? Also, will the X135 transducer work okay with the 332c since I will use a trolling motor mount with the relocated X135's transducer that will be the one that comes with the 332c?

    Thanks much!

    Re: Mounting GPS/sonar (Electro)

Answers to your questions to the best of my knowledge:

To do an install on the bow, you will have to completely remove the curved dash panel around the bow, just several screws.

You can use a dash mounting kit but my dealer just wedged mine in using the supplied knobs. I don't know if this is good, bad, cheapor poor craftsmanship but is seems to be working fine.

I just set my GPS antenna on the ledge (directly under the breaker panel) under the console all the way forward using velcro. It seems to work fine there.

The transducer should be the same for both units.

Just be careful and do not use the "Good N Tight" theory when remounting the curved dash panel on the bow so you stip the holes, somes of the decorative panels are only screwed into plastic behind them.

    Good Luck

    Thanks for the reply, mvv.

An additional question; do you know a good place to buy the TMB-S trolling motor mount and the FM-5 in-dash mount kit?

    Thanks,

Lowrance will certainly have them at list price. If you want to shop prices, do an internet search for those items or contact some of the board sponsors. There's a good possibility that a dealer that sells bassboats around you will have them in stock. You could also put a "Wanted" notice in the electronics section of this board, someone's junk could be your pot of gold. I know I have some older Lowrance parts that might be worth something to the right person at the right time.

    Good Luck

If you purchase it from a place like "Three Rivers Marine" (one of our sponsors), they may be able to sell you a 332c with the puck style transducer for the same cost as the skimmer transducer. Then you'll just mount the transducer on the TM and move the 135 to the bow. Get one with the built-in temp probe.

To mount "in-the-dash", try making something like this out of a thick, stiff plastic or 1/4" thick piece of wood. It's way less expensive than "their" mounting bracket and it works really well.

For your front unit you may want to consider gimbal mounting your unit to the deck so you can adjust the angle of the screen so you can see it best. I mounted mine right next to the trolling motor pedal on the port side using a swivel adapter from Lowrance. It is never in the way. You can use a Skimmer transducer on the TM. I have had 2 different skimmers on my TM with no problems, I fish shallow alot too.
