    279 V speed question?

Just wondering if I am maxed out on speed or not guys. I'm running a 1989 279 V with a 1992 'Rude 150. Raker 24, six inch jack with propshaft 3" below pad. I do not have a functioning tach or I could figure this one out on my own but with 2 ppl and a tourney load I'm running 58 GPS, one person and light load 62-3 and with LWP Im still at 30 psi. Is this about all I'm gonna get out of this boat. The only thing I am wondering is if I am running too much prop. I dont see a lot of ppl running 24p on 150 hp. Any input?
P.S. Not sure if this matters or not but the holeshot on this boat is good, mid-range is decent and top end is decent. From idle to 57mph I would say is around 15 seconds and the rooster tail is just about motor high

    Re: 279 V speed question? (buzzking2001)

I know people with big champs and rangers and such that with 225's tourney loaded would be more than happy with almost 60 mph. again no tach is not the best way to run but we went thru that before on the rude page. get a tach and post the numbers of rpms really dont want to see ya generade the motor due to over reving it . Remember that is Not a 70+ mph boat if you are looking for that get a bullet, blazer, gambler, ally or some such go fast, 60 mph for a 17'9 " boat is very good.

i appreciate all the replys, and yes Im very happy with the boat's speed for what it is. Im gonna buy a tach and install it this winter ( or have it done) so i will know more in the spring. I was just looking to see if anyone else on here was runnin the same type of rig and their input. I really dont thing with the current setup i have to worry about overreving, the engine isnt really screamin at WOT but I appreciate your concern. This is my second boat and Im tickled to death with it just trying to learn more about setups and tips and things like that. Again, thanks for all the replies

I think you're doing pretty good. I have a 179V with a 150 Suzuki and your numbers are almost identical to mine. 57-59 tourney load, 61-63 empty. I run a 24" prop most of the time. This boat likes to run about 3-3.5" below pad. I've got a hydro plate and things really fall off with too much engine height.

    96 278v with 96 Intruder 6" jackplate,

24 Raker 5400 rpms 63 GPS normal to light weight
23 Renegade balanced ,blueprinted & cupped 5850 rpm real light 69.6 gps
normall conditions 64 gps 5600 rpms
23 Temepst Plus new out of the box 64 gps 5600 rpms. normal weight.

All of this with 4"-2.75" below the pad. I just finally went to high with the Tempest and it will blow out a little and blowout real pad in a corner. Water preasure was always 25-28 lbs WOT till I went up to 2.75' this weekend now it 15-18 at 400o-4500rpm but will still get 22-24lbs WOT trimmed out.

I'm going to try the Renegade with the motor real high this weekend but bet it needs to drop 1/2" or so.

Thanks for the input guys, guess the previous owner had her set up just about right then. That is some good speed on the 278 V though man. Im gonna get a tach and then start playing from there, probably wont play too much though
