    regulator smoked

    Hey Everyone,
I Have a 1990 150 xp model # ve150slesb sn# r08605277. Sunday I ran the boat across the for 5min wot, then the tach quit. Got to my fishing spot and smelled wiring burning. my son noticed smoke from under the engine cowling. I disconnected the battery and found the regulator smoking. Disconnected the reg. at the starter and could reconnect the battery without any more shorting. Is there anything i should check before installing a new reg.

Did your battery wing nuts come loose?????

Can you grab a battery cable, yank it in either direction, and make it move on the battery terminal?

Good answer . Nope OMC put just so much smoke in the regulators and a timer. When it is time to let the smoke out poof there it goes and time for a new one.

With your aviation repair background, you are one of the few people who can say that outboard motor electrical parts are inexpensive !!!!!

Glad to see that locknuts are on the battery, as they should be. Almost 99% of regulator failures are due to having wing nuts on the battery terminals. Voltage spikes from intermittent connections are not a good thing.

Shine a flashlight up under the flywheel and look at the stator windings, if they are dark colored (not shiny copper) and/or there is plastic insulation dripping from the black coils up there, your stator may need replacement, too.
