1990 xp200.

dont know the specifics, but i do know that the original owner of the motor went through a "need for speed" phase in the 1990s and tried some mods on this engine. he then decided to put everything back to stock before selling to the second owner (who i bought the boat from).

im guessing the following things had to do with those old mods, but i'm wondering how exactly they worked.

first, is this some sort of tunable exhaust...



im guessing those two rusty washers and nuts are blocking it off now. can anyone explain the hows and whys of this thing? is this a version of the bubble exhaust systems?
any gains if i decided to make it functionable again?

second, any reason for this hole here?...



there are no fittings on the inside or outside of the hole. is there any reason that it would have hosted an additional or alternate pisser? are dual peeholes a common mod? right now its just a hole into the case that, im sure, allows at least a little water to get inside. guy i bought the boat from said its been open like that for as long as hes had the boat.
should i plug it up or should i use it for something?

It's called a "hog snout"...(really)... i think bob or someone use to sell them, all it does is makes it external relief for exhaust...and u are correct on the other..... he probably had 2 hoses running off for the pisser....

This is probably a "SECOND EFFORT" exhaust snout which could be added to any of the larger V6 loopers. Mainly to add a throaty sound to the motor. Check out the brochure below.

would that double peehole thing have anything to do with a high volume water pump of some sort? seems kinda funny someone would add a second peehole just for looks. (even though i think it would look kind of cool. lol.)

I definitely don't think its a bob's. The regular exhaust holes below the pan are not there.

Opening up the exhaust adds more noise. If the motor is modded, it might help you some, I know my buddy's modded GT2.6 loved holes drilled in the lower, and if you plugged them it really made it more sluggish.

It is strange that is does NOT have a idle exhaust relief just below the cowl like a 'standard' motor. The idle relief relieves exhaust back pressure & helps to stop the motor cutting out at idle by allowing exhaust to exit the motor well above the waterline. If I were you I would try it with the exhaust open. I think you would love it. Lotsa others would like it too. It would definately idle smoother.

well, she has cut out on me a couple times while idleing. might be worth a shot.
is this just a matter of unbolting those washers and being good to go, or is there some re-routing that needs to be done inside the lower unit?

when you say "lotsa others will like it too," is there a dash of sarcasm in there? ...as in lotsa others might think the motor is a tad noisy? this engine is already twice as loud as most other boats i see/hear on the water. big increase in noise by doing this?
she also runs a little "smokey." can i expect some extra smoke with the hog snout too?

as far as the idle relief goes. in the second picture (one that shows extra pee hole), there is a venty looking thing in the center, just below the cowl. any chance that its the idle relief? i looked through my omc manual and cant find any reference to that part.

Yep apparently they have a really cool sound particularly when running fast. Grandma will not need her ear trumpet though.
Running smokey is probably due to the oil. Best to run E-Tec XD50 or XD100 to reduce the smoke. Motor will be better for it as well. Less carbon. Runs a lot cleaner. You are right about the "Vent", that is the idle relief. It is different to earlier models.
As far as unbolting the washers, I don't know. I would say "you gotta start somewhere" If there is more to it than that then you would have to drop the gearcase anyway.

those "washers" are probably rubber quickie freeze plugs......Most auto parts stores sell them. Just loosen the center stud and it lets the plug relax and come out of the hole.

freeze plugs like in an engine block? are those exhaust holes that large?
boats not near me now. ill take a closer look at them tomorrow. im pretty sure they're just some regular old big ass washers.
whatever they are, i think they'll need a shot or two of pb blaster before wanting to come off.

still wondering if i loosen that center stud and remove the washers/plugs, is the job done?

and a general question that may pertain here...
with a little more exhaust flow from a snout like the one above, can one expect an increase in rpms?

That is a Bobs Machine Exhaust snout and I wish you luck getting them out. I put one on my old 115 johnson and after just a few trips with them in, they were very very hard to get out. Im assuming that those have been in there and wouldn't be surprised if those plugs melted due to the exhaust.

I also have that extra hole in my engine pan! I put it there and it was for the hose running from the port side thermostat from my land and sea dual plug heads. Ran like a scalded ape with those heads. If you remove those rubber plugs everyone on the lake will know you comming as soon as you get her on top.

i drilled holes in the exhuast housing of an old 150 evinrude years ago and it acually picked up a 100 or so rpms and idled better.draw back NOISE!take them out try it they sound cool.you will get a lot of head turns goin down lake .

I had one on a mid 80's 225, you couldn't hear yourself fart going down the lake. I thought it sounded good though.
