    Binnacle and cables

My binnacle is an original twin OB with tilt/trim. It is about 7 or 8 years old...not sure how old the cables are. I think one was replaced last year. Anyway, I'm really not happy with the stiffness of this unit. Are newer ones any better? How about non-OEM like Teleflex/Morse? Also, I've heard good things about Teleflex Extreme cables....but also heard they don't work well with OMC due to the adapters required. Any thoughts?

Yes, the new ones are much improved, similar to the Yamaha unit.

Will the new ones fit a 7 year old motor?

Yes, connections have all stayed the same.

Yes, connections have all stayed the same. Assuming yours is a System check set up, you will just have two triangular shaped deutsch connectors for trim plus the neutral safety switch wires for each motor up front and the shift/throttle cables for each motor.

From 1996 to 2006, the dual binnacle was the same and still available.

The newest binnacles out have changed completely in design but still have the same connectors.

    tg,

No, I haven't had the opportunity to try one of the brand new series yet.

People are just starting to change out their old controls and try the new ones.

If it were me, I would try putting all new (4) control cables in. Usually stiffness is caused by older control cables. Teleflex seems to be the best choice and all I have ever used.

If the cables don't do the trick, then either rebuild or replace your binnacle control.
The new one is cool and has some nicer features however it does take a slightly larger hole in the dash.

Here is a photo of the new single binnacle just installed. He just purchased a 2007 E-Tec 175 and installed new Tech series gauges and the new single BRP binnacle engine control.

He is still testing everything out so I don't have any real reports yet.

I've heard/read that you have to use some sort of adapters with the Teleflex or Teleflex Extreme in order for them to work with OMC. Is this a major problem?

    Re: Binnacle and cables (tg)

I have never had to use any adapters with the teleflex cables on any OMC engines.

According to the Teleflex site, they make cables for specific models.
In our case, the CC636XX Exteme cable for Johnson/Evinrude. See their .pdf
    http://www.teleflexmarine.com/...1.pdf

    No adapters needed.

Thanks Joe. You are a wealth of information. You think changing the cables is diy do-able?

    Re: Binnacle and cables (tg)

    tg,

It is fairly simple to do. Screwdriver and small wrench.
A little tight quarters when working inside the binnacle control, but not bad.
    The engine end is simple.
I have replaced cables on both the 1995 and older binnacle controls and the 1996 to 2006 newer binnacle controls. The older controls are a little easier than your style, but still do-able.

One of my favorite stores that has good pricing on teleflex cables and they take PayPal is Surplus Unlimited.
They sell both the original style teleflex cables and the teleflex extreme.
    http://www.surplusunlimited.co...300-7

The extreme cables seem to be twice as much. About $44 each as compared to $22 each for the original style.

Also, the extreme cables seem to come in lengths of 2 foot intervals.
The original style comes in 1 foot intervals.
This may or may not be a problem on some boats. Might be a problem on some boats though.
