    "play" in tilt steering wheel

I have a 2008 20i bought new in '09. The tilt steering wheel now has "play" in it up and down. I looked under cap and it seems like knuckle is loose. I tightened everything I could. Still loose. Any thoughts or experience? Thanks, Mike

Re: "play" in tilt steering wheel (chickenbone)

When I first bought my 20i the up and down "play" was the first thing I noticed. I was determined and had my mind set that something was loose. I tightened everthing I could find and nothing worked.

I finally just said the heck with it and now 3 years later, I hardly notice it anymore. I think it has to have something to do with the tilt part on it but mine hasnt gotten any loser than it was when I got it.

Maybe someone will chime in that knows exactly what to do.

I didn't pull the wheel. I talked to a couple of guys and sounded a bit complicated. They recommended a brass hammer not to ruin the grooves. I didn't want to chance jacking it up. Unfortunately, the marina I bought it from is 12 hours away.

Not a Skeeter here but same issue. IF it is a SeaStar/Teleflex it is likely the tilt mechanism. Mine has had slop for years , up down, in and out and it was NOT a loose nut. A few months ago i got tired of it and did some research. They have redesigned the tilt mechanism on these units. The front section is what is different, it is NOT necessary to remove the hydraulics to put it on. I got one of the new assemblies (~$120) and about 20 minutes later it was on. Have ZERO play in it now. The hardest part is removing the steering wheel. I just loosened the nut enough to be beyond the threads, pulled on the wheel with my knees and used a WOOD block and hit the shaft a few times. Be cautious not to ding up the threads! Teleflex was AWESOME in the CS i got from them concerning this.
Well worth the minor cost and effort.

I could post pics if needed. It was not a difficult task at all.

Shaft....great info. If u can post pics that would be great. Especially if you have one with pulling off the wheel and the wood. I might not get to fix this right away, but would appreciate them for future reference. Thanks bro, Mike.
