    Johnson 9.9

Came across a weird issue yesterday in the water (1st time I've had it in water). Launched the boat with myself, the wife and the 2 little kids. My '88 Ranger 320v is equipped with a 9.9 Johnson outboard due to NJ limits. As I went to throttle the motor gave little power and was very hard to steer, it steered easily but impossible to fight the lite current. We were doing a lot of zigzagging. Everytime I throttled up or back it gave little response. The boat prior to my purchasing sat for 3 years. Since then it has a new filter and new gas. I'm not that mechanically inclined but is there anything I can do to check to see why the motor was lacking power? I also think the bilge pump is. It working, could that help the issue whatsoever ever?

You vaguely mentioned bilge running? 9.9 will not push that hull decent from the get go and if taking on water, that will kill any useful power that is being generated by the 9.9...so if it is the first time you have had it on the water, maybe that's all the 9.9 has to offer on a heavy hull rated for a 130 hp motor. Hard steering may just be a cable/steering issue especially if it has sat for a long period or never been serviced. Current/heavy boat/9.9/wouldn't expect much. Post up year make and model of 9.9

Sorry I copy and pasted it and left everything out. Didn't even mean to post it in here.
