Congrat's on the new boat !

If you don't mind me asking, how much more was it for the 175 HPDI ??????

As for if it's worth $2800 for HPDI over carb'd ......... IDK ..... my dad's old Pro V (the original carb'd VMax for all practical arguments) always started easy. As for a 150 on gas, it was decent, escepcially for a carb'd motor and in comparison to other motors at the time. The carb'd 150 VMax engine is a great engine .... the sucker is practically bulletproof. It is also easily modified if you wanted to ever increase the horsepower.

I have nothing bad to say about my 175 HPDI on the ZX/TZX 190. I've been pleasantly surprised at the fuel savings compared to other carb'd motors I've ran in the past. And as one would expect from a DFI engine, it always starts right up effortlessly .... no manual choking or manual throttle advancement.

Is HPDI worth $2800, IDK ...... it takes a long time and a lot of gas to make roughly 1mpg add up. I guess it really depends on your style of fishing. If you're a guy that fishes near the ramp, then I'd probably say no. If you make a lot of long distance runs, then I'd break out the slide ruler and get to figuring.

Also ... check out these Yamah Performance Bulletins ..... both are ZX 190's with 150's .... one is a HPDI and the other is carb'd.

    HPDI

    carb'd

This one is a ZX 180 w/ carb'd 150. I find the numbers interesting in comparison to the ZX 190's ....... either it's all so close it doesn't matter, calibration is different, or the moon's orbit was a little off that day.

If you have the money, i think it would be worth it. The carb motors like to drink lots of gas.

    I agree.

To the OP ..... that's why I asked how much a 175 HPDI was.

If it was that price or less for the 175 HPDI, I'd say go for it. But $2800 just to stay the same HP and go from carb'd to HPDI ..... something sounds off.

Keep in mind too that as gas prices increase, people are going to look for more fuel effecient motors. With that said, do you think that $2800 investment will increase your resale value by that much????? IDK.

Almost sounds to me that the dealer has a carb'd ZX 190 that they want to sell, already rigged, and they really don't want to switch motors unless it's profitable to them.

Carbs also can be ornery if you let them set long periods of time during winter. That's what love about the injection engines. They start every single time.

Can't speak for the HPDI but I can for the carb. I've got a Vmax carb 150 that I bought new in 99. Motor runs as good today as when new. Only thing I've ever done to it was change plugs, lower unit oil and water pump every 2 years. Pushes my ZX 185c 61-63 GPS with 2 guys and a tourney load. Does drink a little more gas than the HPDI but I can live with it. My buddy has a 2005 225 HPDI and has had it in the shop 4 or 5 times for different things.

Up grade to hpdi 175 if you can, I think you'll be happy you did in the long run.

I may be wrong, but his engine may not have a Carb. There is the vmax Carb, the vmax ox66 (efi), and the vmax hpdi.

Take it off and get a Mercury Pro XS! Better gas mileage than the yammi and FASTER!

    no thanks!

I have a TZX190 with the 150 carb and I have NEVER had any issues with it. my fuel consumption is great for how much I use it. If you could tell me you saved 20 bucks every time you went out because of fuel then I would think about it, but I'm perfectly happy with my 150 Yamaha VMAX. 64 mph is plenty fast enough for me in my Skeeter, and the $ difference between the 150 and the 175 seems a bit high to me as well

Something to consider....If the HPDI saved you $10 per trip and you went 20 times per year, it would take you 14 years to make up the difference in engine costs. Another thought...take the $2800 and put it in a Roth IRA and see what its worth in 14 years.

    Re: (skeetercraig)

update price was so much of a difference cause he got the 150 carb motors a such a discount ,i checked another dealer and with the upgrade to the 175 he is still lower plus i was comparing a plain boat to an upgraded boat i have , now it sounds to me they are not gonna offer the carb 150 after this year sooo i think im gonna go with the 175 hpdi

    Re: (skeetercraig)

I think you'll be a lot happier in the long run with the 175 AND the HPDI. Not to mention resale if that time ever comes.

But also, you mentioned 'the 150 will not be availible after this year' ...... the same is most likely for the 175 HPDI as well. I do believe production of that motor is about to dry up as well ..... if it hasn't already.

Rumor Mill is 150/175 SHO is coming ..... but I've yet to see the horse to get it straight from him.

As much as I hate to admit it ...... AND MY HPDI HAS BEEN FLAWLESS ........... if I had the option of Merc Pro XS 175, I'd be very tempted.

If you pull it down the interstate with a good V-8.

64mph loaded to the gills and 67mph with a really light load is more realistic.

Some people say their boat runs +65mph loaded, but obviously my definition of fully loaded is different.

    Re: (Ranger391v)

I don't think you'll ever see 67 with the 150 unless you take it to Hydro tech and have some mods done. 64 empty would be about right.
