    SHO on a 20i?

Has anyone put a sho on a 20 i or ordered one? Thinking of doing something because cant afford gas and oil anymore in the 250 hpdi series 2. Need something at least twice as fuel efficient. Optimax is another option with good gas mileage but do not want to
    change everything out.

azzzuming here u were just changing motors?
good luck! I have been/still am, kicking the same kind of idea around.
word is (from a reputable dealer) that the numbers on a 20i/250sho were xcellent, and in SOME areas little above the fx.(i am not tryin to start anything here, just what i was told).
i tryed to trade!, just motor!!, with 3 dealers, one said he wasnt intrested, but if someone came in wanting a used hpdi, he would call me, one told me IF i sold my boat/motor, he would be glad to order me anything i wanted. and the third,(same as mentioned in the above paragph) would trade!, either way, difference was kinda steep, but i probally should have done it. mine is 07/07 combo, so u open that can of worms, 4yr old boat/new motor, resale, etc.
    i like my 20i.
O, other day,, my boat parked next to a fx/250sho,,,, looked like u could set my whole motor over in the cowling of the sho,,lol. it was noticeably larger!!
    just my thoughts

tks for the reply and aside from the can of worms, like you, I like my 20i...best boat I have ever owned. The re-sale stuff is less important to me cause I'm not thinking of
buying more boats or new ones. My pkg is 08/08. Fishing alot is what I do and hope to continue so the expense of gas and oil is the big issue and the hpdi is out. Have tried running at the slow speeds (thats all I do) and no matter, 2 to 3 miles a gal is all your going to get...that is not acceptable anymore for my pockets, especially @ $3. a gal.

Have you looked at the performance bulletins for SHO and HPDI on 20i on the Skeeter webiste? 50% improved fuel consumption is very far off from reality.

Here are the numbers: Looks like top speed is 1.3mph faster with the SHO.

    RPM SHO HPDI (mpg)
    4k 3.88 3.19
    5k 3.69 3.46
    WFO 3.24 3.07

I would love to get out of the oil as well, but the yearly oil change cost as much as the 5 gallons a year that I burn. I guess us northerners use less as I only put on 50 hours per year. Maybe I spend too much time fishing...

Best of luck on the motor swaps guys, I looked into it as well. It doesn't cost justify unless you just "want" it.

No joke guys. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if my boy Nutman (the OP) burns 5 gallons of oil in 2-3 months and probably puts 50hrs on a motor during the same 2-3 months. There isn't a weekend that goes by that he's not fishing Big Dog local tournaments.

While the MOST OF US are working during the week ...... he's fishing 3 days a week + the weekend.

5 gallons a year? WOW I wished that was all I burned. I think this summer alone I went through close to a gallon every week and a half to two weeks.

    Re: SHO on a 20i? (Ranger391v)

I have 441 hrs on my motor/boat (2008) and often burn 2 gals of oil in a week.
Thanks for the comparison sho/hpdi numbers. They don't look attractive to me at all. Hardly any difference in gas mileage...can that be right? Who would be interested?
I would have thought that the gas mileage would be considerably better, double or triple.
    What is the answer?

The answer is no more two strokes.

I'm pretty sure they wern't intending for chang outs on existing boats, but for sales towards the new boat market.

I'll get one, next time I change boats or purchase a new boat, but not for my existing boat.

Re: SHO on a 20i? (CStewart)

Changing to that 4 stroke when those comparison figures only show a 12% increase in fuel mileage compared to their 2 stroke does not make sense to me.
I got one of the new Yamaha books and it says on page 4 "smarter-up to 12% better fuel economy." There are 2 strokes out there getting better gas mileage than that.

Your post on those figures is right out of the book, thanks.
I may just have to sell to get something more fuel efficient....didnt want to do that but what options are there if I still want to fish alot?

I have the yamaha command link on my Lowrance and I get the same MPG at the same RPM's as listed on the Yamaha site with a 225 SHO on a ZX225 and I have an HPDI. The only way you are going to get double or triple the mpg is get a Allison and put a 150 Optimax on it.

I agree on the allison or looking into the eyra bass cat with only a 175 or 200. Trust me i was as disapointed as you, glad i waited a bit before making any decisions before seeing how these motors performed. This is only the start of lightweight high performance 4 strokes, they'll only get better.

What about maintenance for the SHO?

Valve adjustments, etc. I wonder what these costs might be.

Would installing a Hydrotech system help you in the mileage department? I've been considering doing something like that to my Yammy for improved performance.

    Re: (PeanutMan)

Any modification to increase performance results in adding more air and fuel so mileage won’t be any better. You are better off by distributing evenly and lightening up on the weight you carry in the boat.

That would be more like it. You would think the fuel consumption data would be something
of great interest and the Yamaha catalog would be accurate.
