LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas

In case anyone wants to know the fuel mileage on our gas sucking Yammies... I made a 210 mile round trip this weekend in a tournament. Burnt 76 gallons of gas in my 09 21I w 250 series 2.76 miles per gallon. My buddy with a 21x3 Triton made the sam run and burt 57 gallons of gas for 3.684. I burt a full reservoir of oil ( I think for yammie that's 2 1/2 gallons) my buddy burt a little over a gallon.

Don't get me wrong LOVE my boat... But why can't Yamaha catch up to Merc's fuel and oil economy, any thoughts?????

Oh and by the way I've run 140, and even a 160 mile round trips...but 210 is really a HAUL!

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (Neilslure)

I know the pain...and the only way I get relief is to run 34-3500 rpm.
    (2008 20 i w/250 Series 2)

Just not interested anymore running WOT (except maybe getting to the 1st spot)
and using 50 gals and a gal of oil every time I go fish. Get almost twice as much
mileage this way...guess I figure if I'm going to get 'em will have to get 'em hitting a few less spots...as many tx's and practice, by the end of the year I know I'm coming out ahead.

Thank you for this timely post. I ran around Lake Okeechobee today for the first time with my Skeeter/Yamaha and was in shock on how much fuel I used. I ran a Merc for the last 7 years. The numbers you posted reiinforced exactly what I was figuring. I was thinking I had a problem.

As peanut said, you're better off dropping some RPM's and getting that better mileage!!!!

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (PeanutMan)

+2 on knowing the pain,,,, and like pe-nut said you got to get down below 4ooo to get any relief. in my experience, i dont see alot of savings between 5500 compared to 4500rpm... i am real close to 2.75gpm. but like he said, you drop down below 4000 and it improves drasticly,,,
couple of things i have done recently that has helped me and my setup,,,,
i recently changed props,,, same pitch, (25),, but i added some cup to the tips, and raised my motor a bit,, runnin 2 in below pad,,, what i have found,,, and please these are MY figures,,,
wot, pretty heavy with fuel, folks, and livewells,, 5600/72mph--- not alot of difference there
    whole shot, so so
more bow lift (which i think these heavy boats need,) the cup in the tips made the DIFFERNCE , at mid range.. be4 took 4500-4700 to maintain 45 mph,,,, now i can do 45mph at 3800rpm.
this should give me gas milage i can live with, if i keep my foot out of it!!
I run the Miss River alot, so i am probally going to add a hydrolic jack plate to my 20i SOON, this is about the only way i know to get the best of both worlds.

Muddbugg, i hear you on the Yamaha,I had a 250ProXs on my last boat and it seemed to sip fuel and oil better than any other engine i had, I have a 250Yam now and hate the engine, it does drink gas and oil like nobodys business, i can assure you it will be my last Yamaha unless they can build an engine that conserves fuel/oil, I sure wish i had a my ProXs back..BTW 210 miles just to catch fish, I just cant fathom driving that far just to catch fish, Did you cash a big check to cover your costs?

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (FEARTHETURTLE210)

Yamaha does build a motor that is great on fuel and doesn't use any oil. Posts like these are why I put an F on the back of my new boat. I know they're not popular for most bass guys, but the mileage out of mine has been awesome so far, even running long distances in the 5k RPM range. It's worth a little more money (which I'll get back in gas/oil savings) and maybe some loss of performance to me to be happy with my motor.

Sorry to hear about the poor mileage, though. As expensive as premium and outboard oil is these days, that has to hurt.

Who is running premium? I will stick to my 2 stroke and deal with the gas and oild that I put in it. That is a hell of a run, sounds more like boat riding than fishing. Those 250's love the gas.

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (itsakeeper14)

when they can build a 4 stroke that is not a dead weight on the back of a transom i would buy one, 4 strokes offer alot of benefits but there usually much heavier and lack the performance a 2 stroke offers but they are quieter and fuel efficient...

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (FEARTHETURTLE210)

Glad to hear I'm not alone, Yamaha builds a fine product just needs to maybee do some tweaking to be more competitive. They do stay together well and that's prob the most important thing anyway.

Ya'll should get a kick out of this one...

Didnt win to anwser the question.... Would have but ran out of oil ten miles before the ramp......... I weighed in two pounds more than the winner, but was DQ'ed for being late. I was able to pump what oil was left in the main tank to the remote tank to get by for a few miles, but then shut her down to avoid any problems. We make 160-180 mile runs consistantly and usually win or place in the top five. Prob is when you run that far and (two locks might I add) you are playing Russian Roulet, this time got the loaded chamber

as they say Muddbugg, no guts no glory!! Some times you do get bit but if your used to the podium then this time it was just not meant to be..I dont know if i could make those kinds of runs just to fish,, glad most of our runs are 10-20 miles tops..sad to know that the bigger fish live 80 miles away!!!! Locks are a pain, especially if you get a nasty lockmaster, they know what time tourneys end!!

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (FEARTHETURTLE210)

Sounds like another thing to add to the list of spare things to keep in the boat. Another 50 gallons of fuel and 2.5 gallons of oil.....

Expensive DQ. A long run for me is 20 miles, by then I am sick of running. Have usually passed most people a long time ago or was passed by someone much faster. The ride gets pretty boring then.

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (itsakeeper14)

The longest I've ever ran was 11 miles and that's only because they changed the ramp we were gonna fish from the day before the tournament. I had practiced and found fish within a mile or two from the original ramp then it got changed.

Funny thing, I caught the big bass of the tournament about 500 yards from where we put in.

I'll bet they are closer than you think. The 4 stroke 225 outweighs the 2 stroke like 64 pounds. By the time you take the oil tank out, they are pretty dang close. Also, you do lose a lil performance (2-3 mph) but if I ever buy new, I'll hang a 4 stroke on the back in a second. Would have when I bought a few months ago but found a GREAT deal!!!!

The difference is only 47lbs, actually. But since they go through fuel so much slower, it'll weigh a bit more than a 2 stroke boat as there'll be more of that heavy fuel in the tank at any given time, too.

Re: LOOOONG RUN Yammie drank the gas (jejb)

I have a 09 zx225 / yamaha 4 stroke 225. Yamaha does not have a legal 2 stroke for Califonia at this time. So no choice in new motors. I actually really like the 4 stroke and was one reason for buying the boat. Top end so far has been 69 mph. that is with two fishermen, tackle and full gas tanks. Have been testing the gas mileage for several weeks now. Used 20 gallons of gas with calm waters 5 fishing trips, next two trips with 3 fishermen and very rough waters 3 to 5 ft swells and waves 6 ft apart, used 16 gallons.
Wish I could tell you the rpms but the Skeeter dash rpm has not been updated for yamaha's 4 strokes. Still learning how to drive the boat and plane her out correctly but believe she has some more speed and better gas milege as I learn.

Concidering I went from a center console jet fishing boat that would have burned 15 gallons or more on each trip out I am very excited with the gas mileage I am gettin
Oh all the above was in the Calif Delta.

Isn't Yamaha doing away with all 2 strokes after this year?
