    ETEC Gas Mileage

Anyone out there with a Z20 and a 225 ETEC? What kind of gas mileage do you get. I have a 2005 Z20 and a 225ETEC HO and i am getting no where near the gas mileage that is advertized. At 4,000 rpms i get about 2.5 miles per gallon. I should be getting better than 4 miles per gallon based off the ETEC advertising.

    Re: ETEC Gas Mileage (tmalzahn)

I have a 2006 225ho on a 205DVS and am getting any where from 4.0 to 5.4 depending on how much I get into WOT. I ran 63miles according to my GPS and I was running around 4500 rpms and filled back up and it took 13 gals.

    Re: ETEC Gas Mileage (tmalzahn)

I have a 2005 Z20 with a 225HO and I agree. I don't use the boat all that much or make long runs with it but I have actually watched the gas gauge move.

What I have heard is that the gauge doesn't always read correctly and I can agree to that since when I fill it up the needle is right on the line of F (Full).

I also heard from some others that there were problems with the floats in the tanks and some had to be replaced. All I know is when running around 65mph which is around 5000 rpms it seems like the gas is flowing out of the tank.

I guess the best test would be to fill it up. Run 10 miles and re-fill it. I have had mine in for service and the software was upgraded last year, changed the lower unit fluid and got a print out. It's been an awesome running machine.

I usually run between 3000 and 4000 rpms lately but short runs. I would be interested in hearing some ideas on what the problem could be since I have to bring it into the dealer for some warranty items. Maybe I would have them check it out.

    Re: ETEC Gas Mileage (tmalzahn)

How did you go in sorting out the fuel milage problem?

    I have a similar problem.
3 weeks ago I purchased a 2007 200HP e-tech (60 degree block)for my caribbean reef runner. is a 21ft half cab with a bare boat mass of 1020 kg, a 21deg dead rise and 200L of gogo juice.
the best fuel consumpion figures I can get out of the 200 e-tech is 1.4 km/l on a dead flat day at 3500 rpm and traveling at 39-41 km/h. The prop which I am running is a viper 17 pitch x 14 3/4.
when I increase to 4000 rpm the economy drops to 1.2 km/l, speed 52km/h.

from what I read the best economy when traveling should be achieved at around 4000 rpm.

previous to this I was running a 150HP honda vtech the economy on that motor was around 2.0 km/l on a flat dayat 4000 RPM, Speed 46km/h. evinrude boast that the e-tech's are as efficient if not more efficient as a 4 stroke. I am yet to see this happen for me.

at WOT the RPM on the E-tech peaks out at 5300 and top speed is about 69 km/h fuel figures of 0.85 km/L

does anyone know what could be causing this extra fuel usage I would be happy if I could achieve a cruising economy of around 1.8 to 1.9 km/l or am I just being unrealistic.

    Dazza

I believe they get much more powerful and economical once they get past the breakin mode.

The more oil you inject, the less power and economy you have. Extra oil is being used for break in plus the fuel mix may also be rich.

How many hours have you done.

    Re: ETEC Gas Mileage (ghind)

I hAVE to say that I beleive the etec at cruising speeds is not as good as other engines.

I do love the engines hence i'm on my second...I've a 200Ho big block at I get 1.25 lt/kmile at best avg.

A friend with the same boat with an 200 opti gets 1.1.
another with a yami 200 hpdi gets 1.1 also at cruising.

tried viper, renagade, rakers and rebels and all much of a muchness, with the rebel a bit beter at cruise gas consumption.

They are not the best for milage ..... IMHO

    Re: ETEC Gas Mileage (Dazza)

Hi Dazza, the first thing I would do is get the WOT RPM closer to 5600-5850 because that is optimium RPM for your 2.6L 200HP. On boats like yours that we have fitted this engine to we have seen the best cruise ecomony of about 25L/HR on the digital Commander Tacho your engine should of came with. That would be at around the 4000RPM mark. Like the others have said the cruising fuel ecomony of an E-TEC in our experience is not any better when compared to other clean engines but a better comparasion is the fuel economy at the same speed, not the same RPM, becasue as you mentioned the E-TEC is going faster. What we have found is the low speed economy will be better on an E-TEC, a bit worse at cruising and about the same at WOT, but again I point out that your will be travelling faster at the same RPM with an E-TEC.

I hope your dealer is preapred to let you try some other pitch props or even try the Rebel series of prop that again in testing has shown better ecomony than the STD Viper prop. BRP here in Australia have a loan prop program so get yourself a 15 and 17 inch Rebel and try those.

    Cheers,

    Huey.
