First time Skeeter owner needs help!!!

I just bought a 2003 zx225 w/ a 225 3.1l Yammie. I have never driven a Skeeter or had a chance to ride in one. If anyone could please give me any information on what I need to do to optimze it's performance and head off any potential issues that my occur with this boat and motor would appreciate it. This boat will be sitting in the garage until the weather breaks in Pittsburgh

Make sure you run Ringfree or Seafoam to prevent carbon buildup. If you have the OX66, which it sounds like you do, they have o2 sensors that tend to build up with carbon if you don't run something to keep it under control.

I don't much about boat setups as mine was optimized when I got it but I promise you will LOVE that combination. I have the same setup, just 2 years older.

It must be agony to look at your new ride and not be able to get her out on water. Now is a good time to have the engine serviced and checked out. Hopefully you have a dealer close by. Don't worry about the setup until you run it. The boat may be just fine. Congrats on the "Bug" and welcome to the club. Be sure to get some photos posted of it soon.

How often should I run seafoam or ringfree? I ran all mercury motors prior to this.

I run Seafoam about every 2-3 tanks and Stabil-ethanol every trank.

Also, use ONLY Yamalube. if it doesn't have a water separator installed, get one in there

Thanks for the information. During the winter months this will give me time to get her ready for spring.

I would just settle on Yamalube. There are other brands that work just fine and cost a lot less. See what Jay Smith had to say about 2 stroke oils. Hes an expert 2.5L merc racing engine builder and an former Exxon employee.

Re: First time Skeeter owner needs help!!! (Skeeter ZX-190)

I have worked on yamaha engines for 5+ years and without any hesitation I would use pennzoil blended oil wether it be XLF,Preium plus or Full Synthetic. These oils dont leave behind carbon and grime like the yamalube does.I have ran yamalube for years always changing plugs every 50 hrs. because of carbon problems and I ran ring free in every tank, even more than suggested at times to try and clean up the problems with no success.I myself have switched to Pennzoil and noticed a 95% reduction in the amount of grime inside the prop hub and plugs last many more hours without carbon hanging on them. These have been my observation over the years.

I agree totally. I run Penzoil full synthetic in my OX66 and haven't had issues...actually seems to run cleaner than yamalube. Also was having some issues with my o2 sensor but have since been gone as well....I still run ringfree in every tank and stabil anytime I have to buy gas with ethanol.

I am also a firts time owner 06 zx200 with 200 HPDI. Is there anything I need to know about fuel to use. I already use Yamalube but was not sure on whether to use 87-89 octane. In reguards to the Pennzoil can u mix with the yamalube or should you run it almost empty first. Also when i give it gas and start up on plane if i dont back out of it for just a minute it will start to hop a little on me then i can trim it up and its fine. I have not touched the set up that was on it since i got it last month. I have never had one with a jack plate and not sure if thats what i need to adjust.

you ask Brooks Davies if he's willing to make a signature pic for you, then you upload it to your server, and post the address in your profile signature

87 octane is fine. Local dealer actually does not recommend running anything other than 87. Ethanol is a killer to your engine, run ethanol free gas or if you have to use "enriched" gas, always use stabil ethanol treatment.

Re: First time Skeeter owner needs help!!! (cford28)

I don't know about other parts of the country, but I work for Shell, and around here in RI/Southeastern MA I have never seen ethanol-free gas, it's all "up to 10%" ethanol, and I've never seen enriched gas either. Trust me, if I could find gas without ethanol I would certainly be using it. Let's face it, ethanol sucks!!
I use K100, Ring Free, 89 octane and a water sepatator. I just had my engine serviced before having it winterized & my mechanic told me everything was in great shape so I guess what I'm doing is working. I run 89 because that's what the previous owner ran, and I'm just afraid if I go down to 87 it might knock.

I saw a demonstration that showed K100 works much better than Starbrite/Stabil, but to each his own. I know it's not very popular yet, but I'm willing to bet that if others saw the demo I did you'd never use starbrite again.

Sounds like the engine is to high on the jackplate.I would go down in 1/4" increments till you see it dissappear.I would run the oil tank as far down as you can but there isnt going to be any issues mixing it together.
