Is your transom chipping at the jackplate?

    All,

I thought I would try to get a grasp on whether this is a real problem or not. There is already a thread that discusses the problem:

    http://www.bbcboards.net...80585

Either add your boat to the list if you are experiencing the problem stated in thread above or check that your boat does not have the problem. ZX also includes TZX so no need to add new entries for TZX boats. Also I am interested in boats with 12" manual Slidemasters that are the stock installed jackplates.

I wonder if we can get someone at Team Marine (Jason) to take a pic of the transom from the bottom on Scott's boat if it is still there. Possibly someone already has the pics. I would be curious to see what if any damage exists that may be related to this poll.

Ok all, anymore? I will probably wrap this up and forward the results off to Skeeter next week unless there are more responses. So far it looks like about 1/3 of the owners who responded are experiencing the chips.

I will have to look and see what I have. The boat is at the fiberglass shop where they did the estimate for the insurance company. I will tell you that I didn't see any cracks what so ever on this boat, it is amazing how strong they are.

No chipping at the jackplate, all solid there... Stress cracks elsewhere, another story entirely...

It is interesting that no i-class owners are reporting this issue. If you have an i-class and have not looked, please take a second and take a look and vote that you do or don't have the problem.

This poll is inconclusive, only 35 votes, surely there's more than 35 zx and iclass owners.

make sure you keep your jackplate bolts tight at all times, the will loosen just like motor bolts and prop nuts, its your responsibility to make sure everything stays tight, i have seen numerous jackplates that are loose, therefore resulting in chips and cracking.

Chris, mine are as tight as can be. Well at least 50lbs of torque did not move them at all. You have experience with several boat manufacturers. Any others that had these chips?

Re: Is your transom chipping at the jackplate? (frogbite)

i havent had any customers complain of chips around the jackplate, i know the silicon you see between the transom and the jackplate is for the bolts attaching the jackplate to the boat. I have seen other manafactures jackplates become loose over time as well as skeeters, you might want to check and see if the bottom of your jackplate extends below the transom, most of the new ones i have on the showroom extend about 3/16 to a 1/4 below the transom so the bottom of the corners of the jackplate do not come in contact with the transom, thats why they angle the bottom left and right of the jackplate to offset that. i will do some more checking from our fiberglass guy and see it he has experienced this problem.

Re: Is your transom chipping at the jackplate? (chris@airportmarine)

Chris, thanks. I know the latest models seem to have the jackplates lower. On my 2004 the jackplate is slightly above the bottom edge of the transom. Seem like to me that Skeeter may have been aware and made the change in 2007 or 2008.

Sums it up boys...desing flaw...corner of jackplate is damaging transom, not loose bolts...some boats fall victum...some don't...willing to bet lowering the corner off of the transom fixes the problem.....marine tek for me....later......

Re: Is your transom chipping at the jackplate? (New Moon)

I was a little concerned when I read this thread because I noticed that the plastic covers that cover the area between the cap and the transom are cracked. After a very close inspection I found that there is no damage to my transom from the jack plate. What I did find is that the screws that hold the aluminum C shaped cover on the top edge of the transom came loose some time ago and the pressure from the aluminum caused the cracking to the two black trim pieces. The boat is 12 years old and the condition of the transom says a great deal for the design and quality of construction.

Olddawg, do you have a Slidemaster jackplate on that boat? If so, is it a 12" plate?

New Moon, it is a two step process. First you need to have your picture on a hosted site. See http://www.bbcboards.net...38419

After this you can post the picture by including the correct tags in your post. See http://www.cowtrimmer.com/BBCp....html

Re: Is your transom chipping at the jackplate? (frogbite)

Excuse me for posting....I thought that the thread was good and due to that I felt that it may not be a problem just for one model with one type of jack plate. Carry on....
