Easiest way to install auto bilge pump. I ran into the need

For whatever reason my 01 ZX225 keeps blowing the fuse for the dual bilge pumps. It almost cost me my boat when I got into some big water and the fuse blew again. boat filled with water. Works for awhile but quits when it wants to. I would like to put an auto bilge pump and run in it directly to the battery.
Problem is I don't know the easiest way. Anyone install auto bilge pumps? Or make the present ones in place automatic?

The easiest way to do this is to just take a pump with a few feet of hose on it and put alligator clips on the wire leads. If you take on water you just drop the pump under the water and hook the leads to the battery. It's for strickly emergency use and if the boat is filling up, dropping it anywhere in the rigging compartment or even the floor of the boat will work. You can store it a bag or something in any compartment on the boat until it's needed.

I would also take the time to trace down your short and repair the pumps you have.

It took a few minutes, but I found a photo that'll help.

I think I can help you with this since I am working on my live well pumps tonight. I had to unhook and trace all the wires since the previous owner had everything hooked up wrong. I found the two bilge pumps are wired as manual pumps but the wiring harness has a third red wire for each pump. Since one of my bilge pumps was wired up to a live well pump and one bilge pump is missing I am going to buy an automatic pump and put it in using the third red wire. I need to test this wire though because I am not sure it is hot all the time. I will test it tomorrow night and let you know because if it is the automatic pump hook will be easy. If this holds true it would take longer to take the batteries out and get to the well than it takes to install and wire the pump.

I have this figured out now the auto/manual pump I bought has three wires and as I said the other night there are three wires in the wiring harness. You just have to connect the wires correctly and you are all set. You would not have to buy a auto/manual pump but since it is wired for it why not. I bought a Rule-Mate 500 GPH and installed it. You can buy a higher GPH if you want but I have 2 on my boat and the other is 1500 GPH so I thought 2000 GPH was more than enough.

i agree with k.d. fix your manual pump. but i would definitly install a auto pump, you may have to remove your batteries and on mine the battery charger, just make sure you place the fuse where you can get to it ,wire the pump direct to battery.it will take some time & a little work but well worth it ,even if you have to take it to your dealer to have it installed. ''good luck''
