Johnson 15R79E stalls, then when started again, idles VERY high

Hello,

I have a Johnson 15R79E (1979 15 hp longshaft) that someitmes runs awesome.. then for some reason, just stalls.. Sometimes, you can get it started easily, sometimes it takes 15 minutes of pulling it to start it. Then, when you do get it started (it's in idle at this point), it will start reving like crazy, just keeps on reving higher and higher and won't stop idling faster and faster, I either have to turn the motor off or pop it in forward then it drives normally (until it stalls again....). When it revs really high, I can press the stop button which will make it rev down as if I'm turning the engine off, when I let go of the stop button, it keeps on idling really high..

My question is, what could be wrong with the engine?

The throttle linkage on these engines can wear and have "slop" so that when you speed up or slow down the throttle, the linkage is not actually moving at the correct rate versus your input. Because of this, the shift linkage and throttle can get out of "synch" and cause the problem you are describing. I reccomend you take it to an Evinrude/Johnson dealer and have them look at this problem. They can install some new parts to correct this issue. After they have replaced the worn parts, have them do a "synch & link" on the engine. They will understand what that means.

just so people know that may have the same problems as I did, I had put the motor aside (was using an other one), and I finally decided to fix my motor. I took the carburetor apart, bought a carb repain kit, installed all new part, cleaned out the carb O(I found sand and varnish in the carb), put it back together and now everything is working perfectly!
