Engine Rattle

I have a 225 H.O. Model# DHLSOC Serial# 05109575 and have had alot of trouble with it, and BR has stood behind the product with no problems. Four powerheads and some lower unit repair later, this motor runs great, but only have one problem left. When its fully trimmed out over 4k rpm I hear what sounds like a rattle. If you trim it down 1/2 way and run to 5K no problem, but as soon as you trim it above that you head this "rattle". I seems like this would be an exhaust problem of some kind. Any ideas on what my problem might be??

If it is constant, and doesn't change with RPM, the something is loose, if it changes with rpm, but is slower then the rpms, I would suspect the lower unit.

Had 2 go out like that. I hear a knocking noise, and can't really identify the source. One I locked up completely, the engine wouldn't even turn over, the other I discovered after I heard the noise and checked the drain plugs.

Remember to let your engine come off the fast idle circuit before putting it in gear. If its running more then 1000 rpms, leave it in neutral.

Just checked and all jackplate bolts are tight and nothing to indicate the cowling is loose. It does seem go get louder when your turning at miderate speed and then makes less noise when running straight. It does go away completeky under 4k rpms or when trimmed atleast halfwat down at any rpms

When I took it into the dealer they found some loose bolts in the lower unit and basically rebuilt it. When I got it back it still made the same noise. It almost seems like its coming from the exhaust since you can make it go away. It doesn't get louder with RPMs. I was wondering if there could be something loose in the exhaust somewhere???

I had the same sort of noise from mine( was very loud and drove me nuts) and it turned out to be the flip down trailering bracket latch was not latching the brackett tight in place. I bent the retintion clip and noise went away.

That might be it, I checked the bracket and one of the bolts is actually missing from it. I'm going to take it off and go for a boat ride. I'll let you know how it turns out... Thanks.
