Water/Fuel Separator, can someone give me the facts?

Do all new boats come with these now? What's involved in mounting one in an older boat? (2003 ZX225) Do they require any maintenance? Are they powered by the battery? What's installation like? Does Seafoam do the same trick?

I'm thinking about getting one, If anyone has pics of one installed in a Skeeter I'd appreciate it.

Yes, new Yamaha's come with the fuel/water separator. As far as maintenance goes, it's a filter. You change it every 50 hours. They aren't powered by anything but are installed inline in the fuel line between the tank and motor. They remove water from the fuel, something that Seafoam and/or other additives won't do.

If you look at the post about the "alarm going off when pressing the hotfoot", JFDAWSON has included a photo of the one he installed. His installation is on the forward edge of the rigging compartment and very accessible.

Don't the newer Yamis have them already? I have one on mine and it's a 98' OX66. It's mounted to the motor, it's clear and has a float ring in it. The dealer told me to keep an eye on it and if the ring floats then there's water in it and to swap it out.

You should add the 1 in the boat also

Re: Water/Fuel Separator, can someone give me the facts? (skeetzx225)

I added one to my 05 ZX225 about a month ago.

I opted for the 90 GPH Racor unit from this place:(cheapest i found)

    https://www.marinefilters.com/...RAC01

I mounted mine using a couple of bolts exactly as pictured below (except the picture shows a yamaha unit not a racor one):

It was an easy installation...the best tip is to fill the filter with gas before trying to prime or you'll never get the bulb to go hard.

For maint just replace the filter every 50 hours and drain any water which you can see through the bottom of the housing.

Simple and more insurance for the motor. A $100 upgrade that everyone should do.

You have 3 options or more but here you go,

    1) if you like your dealer then just buy it from him ( i would do it myself because its easy and not worth paying 100.00 a hr / 1 hr to have it done unless you don't feel you can do it)

    2) Have Jason Hale Help you out and give him the bussiness

    3) If you need to save a few $$ and have time for the shiping use boats.net here is a few links I would also order a few extra filters so you have them

    Filter Only

    The whole unit

I bought mine from the local boat dealer. Dealer should also have the fuel line & fittings in stock to do the complete install. It's simple to install and would save you some $$$. Don't forget your teflon tape.......Not the white one either, i got the "yellow" one.

Mine is about due to be changed. Is there anything I need to know before I do it? Is fuel gonna pour out everywhere when I unscrew the filter?

Neil, what I do is get one of those plastic grocery sacks and wrap around it. Then slowly loosen, with the sack underneath. If you go slow you shouldn't spill any. and YES, it's going to be full of gas when you remove it. When I put the new one on, I take my finger and dip in Yamalube and coat the new filter threads.

Like JF said, go slow when doing it. It will be full. Also get a rag to soak up the gas that might spill over.

Will any fuel rush out of the lines or do I just need to be concerned with what is in the filter?

Re: Water/Fuel Separator, can someone give me the facts? (Neilslure)

You may get a little but it's not under pressure so a rag will be enough to catch any that comes out.

The only thing to be concerned it trying not to spill the fuel out of the filter. It will be full to the top so, get a rag and unscrew it slow and all will be fine.
